Following accusations of criminal sexual contact with a minor and child abuse against Timothy Busfield, the TV show Law & Order: SVU has replaced him in his role.
As a big Law & Order: SVU fan, I was really looking forward to seeing Busfield guest star as a judge in an episode called “Corrosive,” which was scheduled for January 15th. But then, news broke about an arrest warrant related to alleged abuse of child actors on the set of The Cleaning Lady. Because of that, the episode was pulled at the last minute, and they aired a different one instead. At the time, nobody knew if “Corrosive” would ever see the light of day, or if it was just scrapped completely.
David Zayas is now playing the judge character previously portrayed by Busfield. The episode that was put on hold has been filmed and will air on February 26th. It features a threat against the judge’s life, an investigation by the SVU team, and Detective Amanda Rollins (Kelli Giddish) helping a survivor of abuse.
Actor Joel Zayas is taking over for Busfield. He’s best known for his role as Angel Batista in the Dexter universe – including Dexter, Dexter: New Blood, and Dexter: Resurrection. He has a long history on television, with appearances in shows like Oz, Gotham, The Blacklist, Blue Bloods, and The Bear. Zayas isn’t new to the Law & Order franchise; he previously appeared in a season 3 episode of SVU as Detective Milton. Now, 23 years later, he’s returning to SVU, and he’s also been in three episodes of Law & Order: Criminal Intent and five episodes of the original Law & Order series.
Given that Law & Order: SVU often focuses on sensitive crimes like sexual assault, the show’s decision to replace the actor playing Busfield makes sense, considering the abuse storyline and his recent charges. Busfield was initially jailed, but has since been released while awaiting his trial. If convicted, he faces a potential prison sentence of at least three years.
