As a movie and TV reviewer, I’ve noticed every great story, no matter what it is, usually has a memorable romance at its heart. But TV has a real advantage – it gets to build up the connection between characters before the romance even starts. That’s why you often see those super-long storylines where you’re constantly wondering if they’ll finally get together – and honestly, sometimes that anticipation is the best part!
Everyone is aware of the long-running desire for a romantic connection between Olivia Benson and Elliot Stabler on “Law & Order.” These characters are at the heart of the show, and their relationship has evolved over more than 25 years and several series, though they haven’t become a couple yet. Following Mariska Hargitay’s positive comments about a potential Benson/Stabler romance, Christopher Meloni also shared his thoughts with People magazine, expressing his support for the idea.
Police shows frequently drag out romantic storylines, keeping viewers guessing for a long time. Because these shows usually focus on solving a new crime each episode, there isn’t much opportunity for characters to develop deeper relationships quickly, except for small moments related to the case. A good example of this is how it took several seasons for two characters to even share a kiss, keeping their connection friendly despite obvious attraction.
But Law & Order: SVU really took the will-they-won’t-they dynamic to a new level. Olivia Benson and Elliot Stabler have worked together for over twenty years, and their close bond has always hinted at romance—something fans have been waiting for. Now, with both characters leading separate shows, that possibility seems even further away. When asked what made their relationship so captivating, Christopher Meloni, star of Law & Order: Organized Crime, explained that it’s the deep, unspoken understanding they share and the subtle hints of a potential romance that never quite materializes.
A sweet and surprising moment in the Season 27 premiere of the show featured Stabler telling Olivia Benson “I love you.” The actor later shared on social media that the line wasn’t in the script – he made it up on the spot, and it ended up staying in the episode!
He admitted it would be difficult to see Benson and Stabler become a couple, even playfully wondering if he was blushing at the thought. However, he also suggested that anything could happen eventually, and that he’d be happy to see it. He joked that he has the enthusiasm, but just not enough time to focus on making it happen.
He shared his vision for how the stories of Stabler and Benson should end, saying he’d like to see both characters find peaceful and happy endings, perhaps retiring together.
Mariska Hargitay Also Teased that the Beloved Pair Might Get Together
Fans of Law & Order are still hoping Captain Olivia Benson and Detective Elliot Stabler will become a couple. As the show SVU begins its 27th season this September, the actress playing Benson addressed the ongoing speculation. She playfully encouraged fans to keep believing in the possibility of a relationship, hinting that Benson and Stabler share important moments together. Although they aren’t officially a couple yet, the actors’ support for the pairing gives fans reason to stay optimistic.
Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and Organized Crime air Thursdays at 10 p.m. on NBC and Peacock.
