The wait is over – Bloober Team has announced the next installment in the Layers of Fear series: Layers of Fear 3. Considering the original game came out in 2016, the timing feels right. However, we still don’t know what platforms it will be on, when it will be released, or if it’s the Project M game previously announced as a Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive.
At a celebration of the game’s 10th anniversary, Bloober Team CEO Piotr Babieno explained that Layers of Fear was a pivotal title for the studio, helping them define their identity and the types of games they wanted to make. He stated they wanted to celebrate the game’s history and demonstrate that Layers of Fear continues to be developed and remain frightening for players.
Layers of Fear was created as a homage to artists and explores the delicate balance between inspiration and obsession. We wanted to show how creativity can be both wondrous and damaging, fueled by ambition but haunted by the fear of not succeeding. By putting players inside the mind of an artist losing control, we aimed to create a sense of understanding instead of fear, turning a horror game into a profoundly human story.
I remember when the team first started working on the game back in 2015 – it was a small group of about 20 people, and it felt like a really personal project for everyone involved. We all poured our own experiences and what inspired us into the look and story of the game. It’s been amazing to see how many people connected with it over the years! As the creative director, Mateusz Lenart, put it, Layers of Fear is really about tapping into the artist inside you – and like any deep dive into art, it makes you learn a lot about yourself along the way.
The team revealed plans for a series of books based on the game, starting with a novel by Marta Bijan later this year. More books by other Polish authors will follow, and fans can also look forward to a physical release of the game’s soundtrack.
We’re just as curious as you are about what the next game in this series will be like! The most recent installment, Layers of Fear, came out in 2023 and was a remake of the original two games, tying them together with a new character called The Writer. It also includes two new downloadable stories: The Final Note and The Final Prologue. You can find our full review for more information.
In addition to developing Layers of Fear 3 and Project M, Bloober Team is collaborating with Konami to remake the original Silent Hill game.
