Shinichiro Watanabe is renowned for creating exceptional anime series that only have one season. Shows like “Cowboy Bebop,” “Samurai Champloo,” “Kids on the Slope,” and “Space Dandy” captivated audiences with their unique storytelling, often earning places among the best anime ever made. With his latest creation, “Lazarus,” fans anticipated a similar one-season run. However, contrary to expectations, the series finale left room for a potential second season. Yet, it’s not just speculation from fans; the director himself hinted that Axel and the crew’s story might continue.
In Spring 2025, Lazarus made its debut as one of the most eagerly awaited anime releases. This series centers around a motley crew of former convicts who are on a global quest to find the elusive Dr. Skinner. Known for his groundbreaking creation, a painkiller that swept the globe, Skinner suddenly vanished, only to return three years later with shocking news – the drug had mutated and would kill anyone who had taken it within 30 days. The storyline provides an excellent canvas for the thought-provoking and imaginative narratives that Watanabe is known for, and it appears that the director has much more to share.
Shinichiro Watanabe Teases Lazarus Season 2
After the broadcast of Lazarus‘s 13th and concluding episode, Shinichiro Watanabe participated in a two-hour live conversation on Storyriders Channel, where he talked about the series finale. Throughout this lengthy and detailed discussion, the director hinted that he might breach his main unspoken rule to revisit the world of Lazarus for another installment.
With numerous global issues yet unresolved, Watanabe hinted that the team will carry on their work after the finale. He expressed his desire to revisit these characters someday, as Lazarus embarks on a new journey to save our world again. He added, ‘Their tale remains incomplete. Incidentally, a sequel could be on the horizon.’
It’s highly probable that long-time supporters of Shinichiro Watanabe were taken aback by the news, as they assumed Lazarus would only have one season. As I write this, there’s no confirmation of a Season 2 for Lazarus. However, with Anime Expo happening this weekend (July 3rd to July 6th), there’s a possibility of a significant announcement at the Los Angeles event.
Does Lazarus Deserve a Second Season?
In Spring 2025, Lazarus was a popular show, sharing the spotlight with the third season of Fire Force. Nevertheless, many viewers felt that, although it provided enjoyable moments, it didn’t quite reach the storytelling and emotional depths of Cowboy Bebop or Samurai Champloo.
In another phrasing, Chad Stahelski’s action sequences in MAPPA’s production, particularly in “John Wick”, were exceptional, yet the storyline seemed thin and lacked the intricacy and depth often associated with Watanabe’s anime. However, it’s worth noting that the series showed significant improvement as it progressed through its first season. The question remains: Does the quality improvement in “Lazarus” warrant a second season and make up for any initial shortcomings?
