League of Legends Is Finally Adding an Overdue Skin Feature

First introduced back in 2009, Riot Games’ “League of Legends” has remained one of the most played Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA) games. Over time, this original title has given birth to several offshoots, including the hit Netflix series “Arcane” and the upcoming “Riftbound” Trading Card Game (TCG). Despite its enduring popularity among fans, there are still a couple of features missing from “League of Legends.” Now, one such feature pertaining to the game’s extensive collection of paid skins is finally being added.

Much like many free-to-play games, League of Legends encourages players to spend both in-game and real-world money on character skins. With each new season comes fresh and returning skins for personalization. However, until now, gamers had no in-game means to preview these skins prior to purchase. Instead, they’ve relied on external sources like the widely-known Skin Spotlight account for previews. But soon, League of Legends Game Producer Mikouz announced that this will no longer be necessary as a change is coming.

Tired of guessing about products before purchasing? We’re currently testing out a new feature called Skin Previews, available to a limited number of users (NA region and select players). Your feedback would be greatly appreciated!

In a recent article about X, Mikouz demonstrates the latest Skin Preview function for League of Legends. As the term implies, this enables players to examine gameplay for each skin in the store before they make a purchase. Some gamers may already be using this feature in-game as it’s currently being tested. The post mentions that Skin Previews are undergoing testing in North America among a specific group of users. Riot is requesting feedback on the feature to refine it further before rolling it out completely. Therefore, the videos shown through X might not represent the final version of League of Legends Skin Previews.

Players Say Skin Previews are Long Overdue, But Worry about Game’s Outdated Client

The response to this sneak peek of the new feature has been diverse. While numerous gaming enthusiasts express delight about the update, many also remark that it’s something long overdue. After all, understanding a skin’s true quality only comes when you witness it in action. Despite creators like Skin Spotlight providing impressive preview videos on YouTube, some players find this additional step unnecessary and are glad about this positive improvement in League of Legends.

While some enthusiasts are not entirely satisfied, they express a desire for the previews to be interactive rather than just videos. As a player puts it, “Why can’t we test out all skins in the practice mode instead?” Indeed, games like Overwatch provide this feature, enabling players to experience the skins in action.

Instead of just previewing the SkinSpotlights, it would be more beneficial for the client to have a trial option where they can test out the skins. This way, they can get a feel for how these skins perform during gameplay before making a purchase, perhaps in training mode or custom matches.

The primary feedback revolves around two main points: Firstly, many users express a desire to interact with the skins themselves, rather than merely watching videos of them. Secondly, some concern has been raised about the potential strain on the game’s aging client due to the new preview feature. Over time, the game client has become one of League‘s major bottlenecks, and players have seized this opportunity with Riot Games’ latest update to voice their requests for improvements to it.

Currently, the Skin Previews feature is still being tested. Some League of Legends players in select regions might get to use it soon, but there’s no assurance about when (or if) it will be fully integrated into the game. Based on feedback received, numerous adjustments could be made before Skin Previews become a permanent fixture in League of Legends.
