Leaked Spin-Off From Popular EA Franchise Reportedly Canceled

Electronic Arts has been going through layoffs recently, like many other game companies. This has affected the team developing the popular first-person shooter, Battlefield 6, and now, it appears several people working on The Sims have also lost their jobs. Based on posts on LinkedIn, at least one planned Sims project has been cancelled.

The future of The Sims franchise is currently unclear, with the new Project Rene and ongoing problems with The Sims 4. Now, it seems one project that was in development has been cancelled. Franci Dimitrovska, a former narrative designer at Maxis, announced on LinkedIn that their Sims project was scrapped, as reported by The Sims Community. Based on images from Dimitrovska’s portfolio, the cancelled project was likely Town Stories, a mobile spin-off game. Here’s what we know about this game, which was never fully revealed.

The Sims: Town Stories Apparently Canceled

EA and Maxis never officially announced The Sims: Town Stories, but playtests for an early version leaked in late 2024, giving fans a preview of the mobile game. It was being developed at the same time as Project Rene, potentially bringing two new Sims games to mobile devices. Like other Sims games such as the discontinued The Sims Mobile, Town Stories would have been free to play and included in-game purchases.

A small group of players recently got a sneak peek at a new Sims game called The Sims: Town Stories through The Sims Labs, EA’s testing program. The game focused on developing a town and getting to know its inhabitants, including well-known Sims families like the Goths and the Pancakes. Screenshots showed a noticeably different art style than previous Sims games, suggesting it might have been geared towards a younger audience. However, according to a LinkedIn post by EA’s spokesperson, the game has now been canceled.

So, it looks like EA quietly cancelled that new Sims project, and they haven’t really said anything about it publicly. Honestly, since it was never officially announced – it was just ‘Project Stories’ mentioned to investors – I doubt we’ll get a full explanation. With Project Rene now focusing only on mobile, maybe they don’t want two mobile Sims games coming out so close together. Or, you know, maybe the first playtests weren’t great. Either way, it seems like there’s one less new Sims game we’ll be getting, which is a bummer!

Despite upcoming changes to The Sims 4, this year is proving challenging for the franchise. Most fans won’t be upset to hear that The Sims: Town Stories has been cancelled. Playtesters found the game felt too immature and relied too heavily on in-app purchases, meaning there wasn’t much excitement for it. While it’s unfortunate for the development team who worked hard on the project, many players likely won’t miss it.
