With the release of *Pokemon Legends: Z-A*, players are revisiting Lumiose City, now reimagined with exciting new holographic technology. Whether you’re a veteran of *Pokemon X and Y* or new to the region, there’s a lot to discover. After spending considerable time with the game, I realized there were a few things I overlooked initially. So, I’m sharing some helpful tips to help you avoid those same pitfalls and get the most out of your experience.
While *Pokemon Legends: Z-A* takes place in a well-known location, it offers a fresh take on the Pokemon formula. Beyond seeing familiar characters, the game significantly alters battles and the city of Lumiose itself. The unique battle system immediately stands out, but as I played further, I discovered details and features that greatly enhanced my enjoyment. These additions not only deepened my appreciation for the game, but also made my overall experience with *Legends: Z-A* even better.
5. Not All Pokemon Appear in Wild Areas

At first, I wasnât sure about the Wild Area. It felt odd to have separate zones for encountering PokĂ©mon, even though it makes sense within the gameâs story. But if you look closely, youâll notice PokĂ©mon are actually all over Lumiose City, not just in those designated areas. The Fletchlings are easy to see, but some PokĂ©mon are much more hidden.
Keep an eye on the trees and rooftops as you explore the city! You’ll often find Bug-type Pokemon, Pancham, and other wild Pokemon hiding there. You might even be able to catch your first Eevee by climbing on rooftops. *Pokemon Legends: Z-A* feels more realistic because Pokemon arenât just in specific areas â they’re all over the city, sometimes even walking around with their trainers.
4. You Can Actually Ride in the Taxis

There’s a small spoiler: one of the first opponents you face in the Battle Royale is a taxi driver from Lumiose City. I first thought it was a neat touch that you learned about their job before fighting them. But it turns out it was also a hint! The game wants you to know you can *actually use* the taxi service in Lumiose City. I didn’t even notice the blue taxis at first, just thought they were part of the scenery. But if you talk to a driver, you’ll discover they can take you to important places around the city! Just walk up to a driver near a taxi and tell them where you want to go.
While fast travel gets you to important places quickly, it’s not always useful after you’ve seen most of the main sights. The taxi is helpful because it can take you to more everyday locations, like city squares, that aren’t available through fast travel. Plus, the driver chats and gives you tips along the way, which really brings Lumiose City to life. I recommend taking a few rides just for the experience â it’s a fun detail, even though it costs a bit.
3. More Wild Areas Will Unlock as You Progress

Starting *Pokemon Legends: Z-A*, the map of Lumiose City might seem a little underwhelming at first. It looks like there aren’t many Pokemon to find in each area, and you might think youâll catch them all quickly. But that’s intentional! As you play the game, the city will expand, with new areas being added and new Pokemon appearing. This keeps the experience fresh and engaging.
I received notifications about new areas to explore in the Wild Area much more frequently than I expected, which meant there was almost always something new to discover. This not only gave me more PokĂ©mon to catch, but those PokĂ©mon were also stronger. It felt like the game world was growing with me, similar to how youâd find higher-level PokĂ©mon in new cities. So, unlike me, you wonât run out of PokĂ©mon to find â more will definitely appear.
2. The Game Has a Poke Ball Return Service

If you enjoy speaking with every character you meet, you’ll likely discover this helpful trick. Otherwise, make sure to talk to the man standing outside most PokĂ©mon Centers in Lumiose City. He’ll pick up any PokĂ© Balls you miss when trying to catch PokĂ©mon and give them back to you, effectively giving you a free refill on PokĂ© Balls every time you chat with him.
Okay, so Lumiose City is full of stuff you can sell for cash, which is great because you always need more Poke Balls! But I’m also a bit of a fashion addict and love buying new outfits. That’s why I always talk to this guy at the Pokemon Center â he’ll give you back the Poke Balls you used! It’s a total lifesaver, and since I’m already there to heal my Pokemon and buy potions, it just makes sense to get those free Poke Balls back. It helps me save a little money for clothes, you know?
1. Youâll Eventually Get a Glide Ability to Help with Exploration

Okay, I have to confess, the Nintendo rep let me in on a little secret when I got to try out the *Pokemon Legends: Z-A* demo. But it really got me thinking â imagine playing without knowing youâd eventually get a gliding ability! Early on, some of the platforms and rooftops just seem impossible to reach. It’s intentional, though! Your rival will teach you this awesome new move later, which makes getting around the city so much easier.
If you find a spot you can’t quite reach with a normal jump, it probably means you’ll be able to get there later in the game. It’s like how Miraidon or Koraidon learn new abilities in *Pokemon Scarlet & Violet*. While the Rotom Glide jump isn’t the most natural feeling â it lifts you up and then drops you down instead of letting you truly glide â it *is* useful for reaching new platforms and rooftops in Lumiose City, and things will become easier as you progress.
