Legacy of Kain Reboot Was Being Made by Eidos Montreal Before its Acquisition by Embracer – Rumour

Following recent layoffs at Eidos Montreal, reports have surfaced suggesting the studio was previously developing a reboot of the classic Legacy of Kain series. Insider Gaming discovered this information while reviewing the resumes of former employees, which listed work on a “dark fantasy ARPG” intended to revive a well-known vampire-themed franchise.

The project focused on close-quarters combat and used parkour for players to explore the game world. Although resumes didn’t specifically mention the title, Insider Gaming has reported it was a reboot of Legacy of Kain. Interestingly, recent layoffs didn’t cause the project’s cancellation; it was actually halted several years ago, soon after Embracer Group acquired the studio.

The report points out the reboot was canceled relatively early in development – after just one year of work. Since then, the rights to the game have been given to Crystal Dynamics, the studio behind Tomb Raider, and what they plan to do with it remains a mystery.

Eidos Montreal is currently developing a large-scale project that began in 2019. Although the project has received a substantial investment – reportedly hundreds of millions of dollars – it’s not expected to earn back the full amount. However, the investment is significant enough that the studio is continuing with development.

Eidos Montreal recently experienced layoffs, and the exact number of employees affected isn’t known. News of the cuts spread after people like former gameplay director Samuel Daher shared the information on social media. Daher posted that he enjoyed his time at Eidos and hoped to stay, but is now looking for new opportunities to work on game design.

This wasn’t the first time Eidos Montreal had reduced its workforce this year. In April, the studio already laid off 75 employees, explaining that they couldn’t find suitable roles for them within other teams.

Earlier this year, the studio announced it would be laying off up to 75 employees because a major project is finishing. The studio emphasized that these layoffs aren’t due to the employees’ performance, but rather a lack of available positions on other current projects.

Highly skilled and experienced professionals are looking for work, and we’re helping them find new opportunities.

Eidos Montreal has faced some challenges in recent years. Their last big game release was Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy. Since then, they’ve been assisting other developers on projects like the new Fable and Grounded 2.
