The creative force behind popular shows and movies like El Tigre, Maya and the Three, and The Book of Life is hinting at a new film featuring a classic Looney Tunes character. The Looney Tunes franchise is currently in a unique position at Warner Bros. Despite the company briefly removing its older content from HBO Max and attempting to claim financial losses on some finished films, Looney Tunes has become very popular with fans on other streaming services and through different distributors.
Talk of a Speedy Gonzales movie started back in 2017, but news about it disappeared. Many thought the project was scrapped, especially after the difficulties faced by other Looney Tunes films like The Day The Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie and Coyote vs. Acme. However, it looks like a Speedy Gonzales movie could still happen. Jorge R. Gutierrez, known for The Book of Life, hinted on X (formerly Twitter) that he may be working on a new film with Warner Bros. Animation featuring the famous character.
Looney Tunes Is Doing Better Than Ever
guess what movie I might be developing at Warner Brothers Pictures Animation…

Looney Tunes is making a big comeback after facing challenges at Warner Bros. Discovery during the pandemic. Though it was briefly removed from HBO Max, the show quickly found a new audience on Tubi, becoming one of the platform’s most popular offerings. Plus, previously cancelled Looney Tunes movies have found a new distributor and are now doing well in theaters.
Currently planned for release in 2026, Coyote vs. Acme is expected to be another project that revives interest in Looney Tunes. And Speedy Gonzales is a fantastic choice for a new film – he’s a major hero in Mexico and throughout Latin America, enjoying a level of popularity that surpasses many other Looney Tunes characters, despite some recent discussions about how the character has aged.
Will a Speedy Gonzales Movie Work?

Speedy Gonzales is a beloved character with strong potential for a new animated movie. Choosing animation is a smart direction for the project. Plus, creator Jorge Gutierrez is incredibly talented. He first gained recognition with shows like El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera and later achieved even greater success with the film The Book of Life. He’s even expressed interest in revisiting El Tigre with a revival.
Gutierrez openly draws inspiration from various sources in his work, particularly when it comes to representing culture in his films. If he can bring that same creative energy and understanding to the upcoming ‘Speedy Gonzales’ movie, it has a strong chance of appealing to a new generation of viewers.
