As a devoted Star Wars enthusiast, I’ve always found the Star Wars Legends series to hold a special place in my heart, even after its de-canonization. For many years, the Expanded Universe served as the fuel that kept the Star Wars flame burning brightly. The characters crafted within the realm of Legends are some of the most iconic in the entire Star Wars universe.
Legends delved deeper into the Force than the current canon, offering tales spanning the history of the Jedi and Sith. This exploration led to a portrayal of Force powers that was nothing short of breathtaking. However, this is where some fans have expressed their reservations – the Force-wielding capabilities could sometimes reach dizzying heights. Yet, it’s also resulted in an array of incredibly powerful Star Wars characters that continue to captivate us.
Among the Star Wars universe’s powerful figures, certain Legendary Force-wielding characters outshine their canonical counterparts. They boast enhanced Force abilities and lightsaber techniques, having faced threats that would leave canonical characters dumbfounded. These ten Legends Force users could effortlessly withstand attacks from any canonical character.
Grand Master Luke Skywalker
In Legends, Grand Master Luke Skywalker represents Luke’s ultimate form or peak version. Over the decades, he immersed himself in the wisdom of ancient Jedi teachings, honed his mastery over various obscure Force abilities, and became an unmatched lightsaber combatant. Facing off against Grand Master Luke Skywalker was akin to confronting death itself, given his formidable skills that very few could hope to match in battle without exceptional talents of their own. In Legends, Luke Skywalker is as overpowered as it gets, a seasoned warrior whose combat experience far surpasses what his canonical self could ever dream of.
Luke Skywalker, as depicted in Legends, has performed feats using The Force that would leave even the strongest characters feeling humbled. He’s virtually unmatched in both armed and hand-to-hand combat. Despite facing seemingly insurmountable odds, Luke always found a way to keep going. His unyielding spirit was a significant advantage in any battle. Even the greatest lightsaber fighters from canon Star Wars would struggle against Luke Skywalker.
Mara Jade Skywalker
Mara Jade Skywalker was discovered by Emperor Palpatine at a tender age. He tutored her in the Force and elevated her to become one of his key agents, leading her on missions throughout the galaxy to strengthen the Empire’s power. She stood out as one of the deadliest assassins in the galaxy, her Force abilities and black ops training enabling her to think in ways that other Force users couldn’t. However, the Emperor’s demise drastically altered Mara’s life, leaving her with an inner compulsion to eliminate Luke Skywalker. It took five years for her to be ready for this task, but Luke’s unyielding kindness eventually won her heart over the period he guided her in the Jedi path. Eventually, they got married and became a powerful duo in the galaxy.
Mara Jade Skywalker’s danger wasn’t primarily her Force abilities, which were typically above average but not exceptional. Instead, it was her unique combat style and extensive training that made her so formidable. Mara was first and foremost a lethal warrior; she was skilled with an impressive array of weapons and could handle them all proficiently. Unlike other Jedi, Mara didn’t adhere to traditional lightsaber combat techniques, often carrying a blaster and using her surroundings as a weapon against opponents. Even in the advanced stages of a debilitating disease that drained her strength, Mara remained one of the most deadly Jedi. Mara Jade Skywalker stands alone in the Star Wars universe, surpassing every other character in terms of sheer lethality.
Kyp Durron
Kyp Durron’s family openly opposed the Empire, leading to their midnight capture and exile to the spice mines of Kessel. Tragically, Kyp was the only one who survived this ordeal. Later, he crossed paths with Han Solo and Chewbacca, who were in Kessel under the supervision of crime boss Moruth Doole. Impressed by Kyp’s abilities, they managed to escape together. Luke Skywalker then assessed Kyp for Force sensitivity, discovering an exceptional talent. Kyp was one of the most potent Force users that Luke had ever encountered, and he began his Jedi training. However, Kyp encountered trouble with a Sith spirit, but ultimately found his way back to the Light. He ascended to the rank of Jedi Master, wielding immense power and speaking out boldly against injustice. The Yuuzhan Vong War, however, left an indelible mark on him, transforming the headstrong prodigy into a wise Jedi Master without diminishing his prowess in battle.
Among the most distinguished Jedi of the Legendary Order, Kyp Durron possessed an extraordinary amount of Force power, potentially surpassing even Luke Skywalker’s abilities. Though he wasn’t extensively versed in various esoteric Force techniques, his mastery could extend to any of them due to his immense power. Interestingly, Kyp didn’t require exotic powers; his strength was such that basic Force skills were catastrophic. Skilled in lightsaber combat and starfighter piloting, Kyp Durron ranked among the deadliest Jedi ever. In essence, he could effortlessly outmatch almost any character within canon without even acknowledging their presence.
Jacen Solo/Darth Caedus
As a devoted film enthusiast, I’d put it this way: Growing up as Han and Leia Solo’s son, I, along with my twin sister Jaina, exhibited extraordinary Force sensitivity. While she was more impulsive, I was always the contemplative one, striving to maintain a balance on the Light Side and questioning the moral implications of being a Jedi and wielding the Force.
The Yuuzhan Vong War, however, challenged my convictions. I grappled with the ethical dilemmas of resisting an invasion. Captured and tormented by Vergere, a mysterious figure who was both a former Old Republic Jedi, a hidden Sith, and a Yuuzhan Vong familiar, I underwent a transformative journey that led to a new perspective on the Force.
Post-war, I embarked on a five-year odyssey across the galaxy, learning diverse Force teachings from various sects and mastering powers far beyond what any Jedi had achieved. I played a crucial role in the Killik Swarm War but found myself slipping into darkness, a descent that would culminate years later when I chose to embrace the dark side under Lumiya’s tutelage. Becoming Darth Caedus, I briefly ruled the galaxy through cunning political strategies before my reign came to an end.
Darth Caedus excelled at manipulating the shatterpoint, traversing temporal realms in a manner that allowed him merely to observe past events without significantly altering them. He possessed an extraordinary ability to assimilate various energy forms, and his proficiency in lethal techniques was unparalleled, extending even into the realm of imagination. His Force powers and martial prowess surpassed those of any known character within canon, with only the most formidable beings from the Legends universe able to rival him.
Darth Bane
In his time, Darth Bane was unmatched in the Dark Side’s power, joining the Sith Brotherhood only to realize their practices contradicted the path to true strength. He embarked on a journey to connect with ancient Sith, unlocking forbidden abilities that enabled him to annihilate not just the Sith Brotherhood but also the Jedi Army of Light. Afterward, Bane established the Rule of Two, finding a girl named Zannah to train as his apprentice. The remainder of his life was spent refining the powers of the Sith, becoming proficient in lightsaber combat, rediscovering the way of Sith magic and alchemy, and setting the foundation for Darth Sidious’s teachings. Bane amassed an impressive tally of enemies wielding the Force, even resorting to denying himself the use of the thought bomb to eliminate both the Jedi and Sith armies.
I’ve always stood head and shoulders above the rest, some even whispering that I was the legendary Sith’ari, the prophesied perfect Sith. Battles that should have claimed my life became mere stepping stones for me, particularly when I donned my formidable orbalisk armor. These orbalisks, hard-shelled parasites that fed on the Force, granted their wearer access to their immense energies as well. I lost the armor in a fierce battle with the Jedi, yet somehow survived the extraction process, something no one had managed before. As the years wore on, I became less of a physical combatant, but my Force powers grew stronger than ever. In my prime, I could cut through obstacles like a hot knife through butter, and even in my later years, I remained a formidable foe, nearly impossible to defeat.
Revan
Four millennia before the Battle of Yavin, there lived a former Jedi named Darth Revan. Known for his military prowess, he participated in the Mandalorian Wars. He assembled an unparalleled army, one that had never been seen throughout the galaxy. Alongside his apprentice Malak, Revan embarked on a quest to discover hidden Force knowledge, which eventually led them to adopt the ways of the Sith. They discovered the StarForge, a powerful artifact from the Rakatan’s Infinite Empire, granting them the power to create starships out of thin air. Over time, Revan and Malak’s army were corrupted by the dark side. The two Sith Lords eventually plunged the galaxy into darkness once more. However, after a confrontation with a Jedi team led by Bastilla Shan, Revan was erased of his memories. He later regained consciousness, turned away from the dark side, and thwarted Darth Malak’s plans. In the end, he faced off against the Sith Emperor Vitiate to save the galaxy once more.
Darth Revan excelled in both the Light and Dark Sides of the Force. He was the most powerful Jedi of his era, becoming even more formidable as time passed. With abilities surpassing those of opponents far stronger than himself, Revan demonstrated remarkable skills in combat. Although he didn’t defeat Vitiate, a virtually divine entity of the Dark Side, his performance against this overpowering adversary was nothing short of astonishing. In the canon, it would be rare to find anyone who could match Revan in battle.
Darth Krayt
Darth Krayt is an extensive tale that follows the transformation of A’Sharad Hett, initially a Jedi from the Old Republic, who was brought up by his father Sharad Hett among the Tusken Raiders. In the Clone Wars, A’Sharad Hett was taken captive by progressive forces of the Yuuzhan Vong. After enduring torture and experiments at their hands, he managed to escape. Subsequently, he delved into the Dark Side to find a means to cope with the effects of the Vong’s treatment, eventually metamorphosing into Darth Krayt, the One Sith. Krayt maintained his anonymity from Palpatine, the new Jedi Order, and any other Sith that emerged, building an army in the process. Over time, he became incredibly potent in the Dark Side, even assisting Luke Skywalker in defeating Abeloth. Living for over a century due to the Force, Vong experiments, and hibernation, Krayt and his One Sith forces ultimately subjugated the galaxy.
In the course of his long history of employing the dark side and enduring Vong implants in search of a healer, Darth Krayt inevitably met his demise. However, prior to this, Darth Krayt was exceptionally powerful, capable of overpowering any Jedi, be they of the Dark Side or the Light Side, during his advanced years. In his prime, Krayt was a force unto himself, embodying the might and skill that made him an unrivaled opponent for any canonical adversary, as the One Sith.
Darth Nihilus
Palpatine explained that the dark side of the Force offers a route to numerous abilities that some might find unconventional, and this is exemplified by Darth Nihilus. Emerging during the subsequent stage of the Sith Wars around four thousand years post-Battle of Yavin, Darth Nihilus rekindled the strife following Revan’s conquest of Malak. Known as the Lord of Hunger, he utilized the dark side to siphon life from whatever stood before him. By doing so, he amplified his power significantly. In fact, this ominous Sith Lord was capable of draining an entire planet of its Force energy, amassing an unimaginable level of power.
Darth Nihilus possesses immense power independently, and his ability to siphon energy from others only amplifies this might. This formidable strength makes him a formidable adversary in the Star Wars universe, capable of overpowering most other characters as depicted in canon. What sets Nihilus apart is not just his terrifying power level but also his growth potential, making him all the more awe-inspiring. To top it off, he demonstrates exceptional skill with lightsabers in combat, ensuring that any battle against any canonical character would result in victory for Darth Nihilus.
Sith Emperor Vitiate
Ages past, a figure known as the Immortal Emperor, originally hailing from the potent Sith species called Tenebrae, rose to prominence. He was a mighty Force user and conqueror who eventually earned the title of Darth Vitiate, dominating planets and refining his skills in the Dark Side to maintain his own life force by siphoning energy from others. Mastering the art of essence transfer, he began transitioning between bodies, establishing a covert Sith Empire that lurked within the galaxy’s depths. The duo comprising Revan and Malak stumbled upon this empire, which contributed significantly to their decision to form their own Sith army as a countermeasure. Vitiate stood alone in his mastery of the Dark Side, employing it in ways never before imagined.
Vitien’s power surpasses that of any other Sith in history, and might even rank second among all Force users in Legends. Living for countless millennia, Vitien became a master of the Dark Side and combat to an almost inconceivable degree. In terms of raw power, Vitien is extraordinary; he could single-handedly wipe out large segments of the Jedi Order as they are depicted in the canon stories.
Abeloth
In the Star Wars Legends, Abeloth stands head and shoulders above all other Force users in terms of power. She’s essentially the personification of the Dark Side and is linked with the well-known characters from Star Wars: The Clone Wars. Initially joining a group as the Mother, she was mortal though, so her existence would come to an end eventually. Abeloth imbibed from the Fountain of Power and bathed in the Pool of Knowledge, transforming into a Force deity in the realm known as Beyond Shadows, which could be accessed via the black holes of the Maw. After escaping the Maw, she started switching bodies, utilizing her Force abilities and an unknown Sith sect as her troops to come close to destroying Coruscant and the Jedi Order. Abeloth was a foe that few could match, and even Luke Skywalker and Darth Krayt found it challenging to defeat her.
Abeloth possesses an extraordinary level of Force power. Her unique talent for manipulating minds enables her to turn vast numbers of enemies against their will. Interestingly, she never needed a lightsaber as her Force abilities enabled her to engage multiple Jedi and Sith simultaneously. In essence, Abeloth is considered a deity in the Force, and it’s questionable whether any other known Force user could stand a chance against her; more likely, they would join her ranks.
