LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight Voice Actor Has Been a Batman Fan For His Whole Life

With the release of LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight just around the corner on May 29th, Shai Matheson, the voice actor for Batman, has discussed his approach to the role. In an interview with GamesRadar, Matheson – who has previously worked on games like Final Fantasy 16 and Xenoblade Chronicles 3 – revealed he’s been a lifelong Batman fan. He also explained that his performance was inspired by Michael Keaton’s iconic portrayal of the character in the 1989 Batman film.

I’ve loved Batman since I was a kid – it’s just always been a part of me. I started watching the movies at a really young age. My all-time favorite is Batman Returns, the 1992 sequel with Michael Keaton. He was always my favorite Batman, and I feel like that passion has always been inside me.

Before starting, I really prepared by revisiting everything – I rewatched all the movies and spent a lot of time watching clips online, especially from the Arkham series, to fully get into the role.

Matheson discussed how honored he was to become part of the impressive group of actors who have played Batman, referencing stars like Michael Keaton and Kevin Conroy—best known for voicing the character in Batman: The Animated Series and the Batman: Arkham video games. He admitted feeling intimidated, saying, “Kevin Conroy is the gold standard for Batman voices, so it’s a bit scary.” He added that he was nervous to add his own performance to the legacy of actors who have brought the character to life.

Matheson expressed how honored he is to voice the character in LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight, saying it feels like a dream come true just to be part of the project.

Given Richard Matheson’s well-known love of Batman, he’s a perfect choice for LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight. This aligns with what TT Games’ Johnathan Smith said about wanting the game to pull inspiration from many different Batman stories.

According to Smith, the game blends memorable Batman moments with subtle references and original humor to fully immerse players in the experience of becoming the Dark Knight. They’ve taken inspiration from across the Batman universe and woven it into a single, cohesive story.

We’re incredibly honored to be working on this project. We have access to an amazing wealth of source material, and we’re thrilled to be the first to combine it all into a single video game experience. Using cutting-edge technology, we’re building a deeply immersive Gotham City and designing gameplay that mirrors the character’s emotional arc, creating something truly unique.
