Previously this year, a secret collaboration between Nintendo and LEGO was hinted about a Game Boy-themed set. However, neither party disclosed the design then. But now, the cover has been lifted! The set has been unveiled in its entirety, and a promotional video has been launched, mimicking the advertisement of the actual Game Boy. The release date is scheduled for October 6th. This 421-piece collection offers two “cartridges,” one themed on Super Mario Land, and another on The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening. Compared to other Nintendo LEGO sets, it is priced more affordably at $59.99.
For Nintendo enthusiasts, the Game Boy-inspired design is undeniably appealing. LEGO, however, has added an extra layer of allure with the inclusion of lenticular screen options. Essentially, this feature allows builders to incorporate images that make the LEGO Game Boy appear as if it’s playing games like Super Mario Land and Link’s Awakening. This unique addition certainly sets the build apart and makes it more eye-catching than it would be otherwise. For some time, LEGO primarily produced sets geared towards fans of all ages who loved Nintendo. But in recent years, we’ve noticed a surge in sets designed for older LEGO enthusiasts. Sets such as The Great Deku Tree and the latest LEGO Mario Kart are more suited for those with spare cash and the time to assemble larger models. Although the LEGO Game Boy might not attract those who didn’t know the system, it seems like a must-have for people born in the 80s and early 90s.
It’s clear that the LEGO Game Boy’s ability to swap cartridges opens up a lot of potential for growth down the line. Many Nintendo enthusiasts might be willing to spend money on additional games beyond the ones already included, and Pokemon Red and Blue could very well be among them. Since LEGO is acquiring the rights to create Pokemon sets in 2026, it’s possible that we could see these games available as add-ons, though this is just speculation at the moment. Other popular choices might include Metroid II: The Return of Samus or Donkey Kong ’94.
The initial Game Boy was a groundbreaking video game device for Nintendo, reshaping the gaming world and serving as a precursor to the Nintendo Switch. In light of its upcoming launch, LEGO will have constructed two distinct Nintendo systems in brick format. Other possibilities, such as the Super Nintendo and N64, might also materialize. With an abundance of potential designs, LEGO can expect continued production as long as fans continue to purchase these sets, guaranteeing a rich future for these builds.
