Many fans consider Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back to be the best film in the Star Wars saga, praising its serious mood, detailed universe, and shocking plot twist. The movie puts the heroes through their toughest challenges – Luke fails to rescue his friends from Darth Vader, who defeats him in a duel, and then reveals a stunning family secret. The film ends on a bleak note with Han Solo captured and frozen, forcing the heroes to regroup and prepare for another battle. However, in Star Wars #9 from Marvel Comics, Leia manages to avoid a mistake her brother made, preventing his defeat.
This Star Wars comic series takes place after the fall of the Empire, with the heroes now working to protect the newly formed New Republic. They face a new danger in Reyna Oskure, a powerful witch who plans to incite war against the Republic by manipulating the people of the planet Nagi and the Fenril Sector. Luke and Han are battling Reyna’s forces on Nagi, while Leia is forced to make a difficult choice: remain on Chandrila, the capital, or go to their aid. Her decision mirrors a similar challenge Luke faced in The Empire Strikes Back.
Leia Avoided Recreating One of Luke’s Greatest Failures

When Leia receives a message indicating Han is being pursued by Reyna’s forces, she immediately decides to travel to Nagi and rescue him and Luke. But just as she’s preparing to leave, Mon Mothma, a close friend and the former leader of the Rebel Alliance, intervenes. Mon pleads with Leia not to go, explaining that while Luke and Han need her, the New Republic relies on her leadership even more. Mon argues that Leia’s attempt to save two people could jeopardize her position and the fragile stability of the New Republic.
This moment, where a Skywalker is willing to risk it all to help their friends, strongly echoes a key scene from The Empire Strikes Back. Like when Luke Skywalker was training with Yoda, he suddenly sensed his friends were in danger – captured and tortured by Darth Vader at Cloud City on Bespin. Even though his training wasn’t finished, Luke decided he had to go rescue them. Yoda and the Force ghost of Obi-Wan pleaded with him not to go, warning him it was too risky and he wasn’t prepared. As the last Jedi, Luke represented the only hope for defeating the Sith, and his capture, death, or fall to the dark side would mean certain doom.
Leia and Luke react very differently to warnings they receive. Luke, ignoring his master’s advice, rushes off to save his friends and falls directly into Vader’s trap. His arrival doesn’t help at all – Han is already frozen and with Boba Fett, and Lando had already rescued Leia, Chewbacca, and C-3PO from Cloud City. Luke almost gets himself killed, but doesn’t achieve anything positive. Leia, however, listens to Mon’s advice and stays put instead of trying to rescue Han and Luke herself. She uses her position as a leader to order a fleet of New Republic ships to Nagi, hoping to negotiate a peaceful surrender and prevent a war.
Star Wars #9 Shows the Main Difference Between Leia and Luke.

Leia demonstrates a key lesson Luke didn’t grasp from Yoda – the importance of patience. Luke acted impulsively, letting his emotions drive him to risk everything without a clear plan to rescue his friends. Leia, however, understands that rushing into the situation on Nagi wouldn’t help. Instead, she strategically uses her position to coordinate a response with the New Republic fleet, aiming to prevent war and provide backup for Luke and Han if needed. This thoughtful approach highlights her maturity and foresight.
As a huge movie fan, I’ve always been fascinated by why Luke and Leia made such different choices. It really comes down to how they were raised after being separated as babies. Luke grew up stuck on a farm on Tatooine, always longing for adventure and feeling trapped. We see in the first couple of films that he’s impulsive and throws himself into danger without thinking, which is brave, but also got him into trouble – that fight with Vader was a tough lesson! Thankfully, by the third movie, he’d learned to be more patient and think things through. He still cared deeply about his friends, but he wasn’t just rushing in blindly anymore. That growth is what allowed him to save Han and ultimately, the entire galaxy.
While Luke lived a simple, uneventful life on a farm, Leia was raised as a princess on the tranquil planet Alderaan. However, her upbringing wasn’t just about royal life; she was fostered by Senator Bail Organa, a key, yet hidden, leader of the Rebel Alliance. He taught her to think clearly and plan carefully. Discovering her adoptive father’s secret work, Leia eagerly joined the Rebellion, becoming a covert ally. As seen in Star Wars: Rebels, she was already undertaking dangerous, undercover missions for the Rebels at just 16 years old. By the time Luke became involved in the fight, Leia had years of experience using her intelligence and political abilities to support the Rebels from the shadows.
As a huge Star Wars fan, I’ve always appreciated Leia’s strength, and issue #9 really highlights it. Unlike Luke, she didn’t need a lesson in patience and planning – she’d been living it her whole life just to survive! It’s a great reminder that winning a war isn’t just about big battles. Leia proves it’s also about smart politics, thinking ahead, and staying calm under pressure. I loved how she started her plan for Nagi, carefully considering the New Republic’s safety – something Luke hadn’t quite mastered after Cloud City. It just goes to show, Yoda was right: failure really is the greatest teacher, and Luke definitely grew from his. Leia, though? She was already a step ahead.
