Awards season is now underway, and as we wait for the Oscar nominations later this month, several awards shows are giving us hints about who might win. While surprises are always possible, these early awards help us understand which films are leading the race. Movies like One Battle After Another, Sinners, Hamnet, and Marty Supreme are consistently being recognized, making them strong contenders for Oscars. The recent awards results suggest one film might be the clear frontrunner.
As a total movie fanatic, I was thrilled to see the nominations for this year’s Actors Awards (formerly the SAG Awards) drop, and wow – Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another absolutely crushed it! Seven nominations is incredible – it’s actually a record! Apparently, Shakespeare in Love held the previous record with five, and a few other films had tied that, but One Battle After Another blew that out of the water. Sinners was poised to tie the old record, but Anderson’s film took the crown. Here’s a breakdown of all the nominations One Battle After Another snagged:
- Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture
- Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role (Leonardo DiCaprio)
- Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role (Benicio del Toro)
- Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role (Sean Penn)
- Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role (Chase Infiniti)
- Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role (Teyana Taylor)
- Outstanding Action Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a Motion Picture
One Battle After Another Is the Frontrunner To Win Best Picture at the Oscars

I’ve been following the Oscar buzz closely, and ever since it came out last fall, One Battle After Another has been a top contender. It’s been almost universally praised by critics, but what’s really interesting is how much love it’s getting from people within the industry itself – directors are calling Anderson’s work masterful, and the cast is getting rave reviews. The recent Actors Awards nominations really cemented its position, and honestly, with the acting branch being the largest voting group in the Academy, it feels like One Battle After Another is now the clear frontrunner for Best Picture.
Considering Wes Anderson hasn’t won an Oscar despite eleven nominations, his new film, One Battle After Another, is expected to be a major contender during awards season. He’s almost certain to win Best Adapted Screenplay, and is also a strong candidate for Best Director. The film itself has a good chance of winning a couple of acting awards, potentially including Best Supporting Actor, thanks to standout performances from Sean Penn, who plays the villain Col. Steven J. Lockjaw, and del Toro as Sensei Sergio. However, the actors in One Battle could split votes, potentially benefiting another nominee.
With “One Battle After Another” currently leading the Best Picture race, Leonardo DiCaprio is a strong contender for his second Best Actor award. The last three Best Picture winners all included an Oscar-winning lead performance, and DiCaprio’s work in this film fits that pattern – he’s delivering a fantastic performance as a frantic father searching for his daughter. While Timothée Chalamet in “Marty Supreme” is a formidable opponent, DiCaprio has a good chance of winning. However, the actresses from “One Battle” might face tougher competition. Infiniti currently seems behind Jessie Buckley and Rose Byrne, and Taylor is up against a strong field of supporting actresses including Amy Madigan, Ariana Grande, and Wunmi Mosaku. It will be interesting to see how those supporting actress categories unfold.
Recently, the Oscars have been dominated by a few films that win big in major categories. Last year, Anora won Best Picture, Director, Actress, and Screenplay, following similar success for Oppenheimer and Everything Everywhere All at Once. Now, One Battle After Another appears poised to follow that pattern, though it’s still early in the awards season. While it’s currently the frontrunner, other films are also generating considerable support.
