Leslie Jones Reveals Kate McKinnon Wasn’t Always ‘Kate Middleton’

To Leslie Jones, Kate McKinnon, another SNL alum, will forever remain a “princess” – but in an unconventional sense that’s different from what she initially imagined.

Prior to the 50th anniversary special of Saturday Night Live on February 16, Kate and Leslie looked back on the numerous memories they created during their time at the renowned sketch comedy show. Despite their comedic bond being evident throughout their collaboration, it was revealed that Leslie didn’t learn Kate’s real surname until well into their friendship.

Kate, a familiar face on the show from 2012 to 2022, mentioned during NBC’s SNL 50 red carpet event that she thought I was Princess Kate Middleton. Leslie, who was part of the cast from 2014 to 2019, then joked, “And then I would ask who Kate Middleton is, and she replied, ‘A snooty royal.’ ” (You can check out all the stars on the red carpet here.)

Although the actress known for playing Barbie might not be the Princess of Wales, the ex-host of Supermarket Sweep deeply admires her, expressing, “You’re not just a princess; you’re my queen.

Without a doubt, Kate has solidified her status as an icon by portraying some of the show’s most memorable characters, including Hillary Clinton and Angela Merkel. When it comes to her approach to tackling such grand roles, that’s another story altogether.

Kate reminisced, “It seems I must delve deeply into research on YouTube, as I’m puzzled about how they managed the show without it.

But there is one special character that the 41-year-old never got the honor of playing.

Kate playfully suggested, “Of all the characters I’ve played so far, I think Leslie Jones would be the most iconic one for me, but unfortunately, my height might stand in the way.

Following a decade filled with remarkable moments on the iconic show created by Lorne Michaels, Kate reflects on her past experiences with nothing but a sense of accomplishment and pride.

In a 2022 appearance on Live With Kelly and Ryan, I shared that my lifelong dream was to be part of Saturday Night Live. Guess what? That dream came true! I embraced the experience wholeheartedly, had an incredible decade, and then, just like that, I felt the weight of it all, and my body yearned for rest. It seemed like the right time to move on.
