Lewis Capaldi Makes Comeback After 2-Year Music Hiatus

On June 28th, Lewis Capaldi gracefully returned to the Glastonbury Festival following a two-year hiatus dedicated to prioritizing his wellbeing.

At Glastonbury, it’s a joy to return, Capaldi, aged 28, shared with the audience during his unexpected performance. “To be honest, I won’t say much today on stage because, well, if I did, I might just burst into tears.

The artist known as ‘Someone You Loved’ took a break from public appearances after giving an underwhelming performance at Glastonbury in 2023 summer. During the festival, Capaldi experienced vocal difficulties on stage, which were linked to his recent diagnosis of Tourette’s syndrome, an issue with his nervous system.

On the Pyramid Stage on Saturday, Capaldi expressed how much he had yearned to perform for the audience while he was away, saying it very sincerely.

He confessed that there were moments when he doubted if such an event would occur again, but sincerely, from deep within his heart, he was ecstatic that everyone was present. It truly makes his world.

He then declared, “My name is Lewis Capaldi and I’m f***ing back, baby!”

The singer-songwriter played a short concert featuring seven tunes, including his U.K. number one hit “Someone You Loved,” “Grace,” and “Before You Go.”

Or alternatively,

The musician who writes songs for the voice performed a brief showcase of seven pieces, which included his U.K. chart-topper “Someone You Loved,” “Grace,” and “Before You Go.

In September 2022, Capaldi revealed he had received a diagnosis for Tourette’s Syndrome, a condition characterized by repeated physical and vocal tics which cannot be voluntarily controlled. (The Mayo Clinic describes Tourette’s Syndrome as “a disorder that causes repetitive motor movements or unwanted sounds that can’t be prevented.”)

During an Instagram Live session, Capaldi explained that he’s been known to have this habit for some time now. He often does a shoulder twitch and people notice it in his TikTok videos, with many asking why he does it. He finds their curiosity understandable.

He continued, “It’s something new to me, I haven’t delved deep into it yet – I’m still learning. I’ve had Botox injections in my shoulder to keep it stationary. It worked for a while, but the downside is that it affects me in various situations – when I’m excited, stressed or even happy. It seems to happen frequently.

In a surprising move, Capaldi shocked fans immediately following his performance at Glastonbury Festival in 2023 by announcing that he was canceling all upcoming shows. He revealed on Instagram in June 2023 that he required time off from touring for an extended period.

He mentioned that he’s continuously adapting to his Tourette’s syndrome and on Saturday, it was clear he needs to invest significantly more time taking care of his mental and physical wellbeing so he can continue doing things he cherishes for years to come.

He made clear his current emotional condition by saying, “I must be feeling good to deliver the level of performance that everyone here expects.

Two years after the release of his comeback single “Survive”, many correctly anticipated that Capaldi would unexpectedly take the stage at Glastonbury. On Saturday, he performed alongside artists such as Brandi Carlile, Raye, John Fogerty, and headliners Neil Young and the Chrome Hearts. The closing day of Glastonbury (Sunday) will see performances from headliner Olivia Rodrigo, Noah Kahan, Nile Rodgers & Chic, and Rod Stewart, among others.
