Lewis Hamilton’s beloved companion has finished his earthly race.
Oh my gosh, I’m absolutely devastated! I just heard that Roscoe, my absolute favorite Formula One driver’s English bulldog, has passed away. He was in a coma for the last few days, and I was desperately hoping he’d pull through. He was 12 years old, which feels way too short for such a sweet pup. I’ve been following this driver for years, and Roscoe was always such a big part of his life – he’d often share pictures and videos. It just breaks my heart! #RIPRoscoe, you’ll be so missed!
In a September 29th Instagram post, Lewis, 40, shared the heartbreaking news of his dog Roscoe’s passing. He wrote that after four days on life support, and a valiant fight for his life, he had to make the incredibly difficult decision to say goodbye. “He never stopped fighting, right until the very end,” Lewis wrote. He added that he felt deeply grateful and honoured to have shared his life with such a beautiful soul, describing Roscoe as an angel and a true friend.
Roscoe passed away five years after Lewis lost his other English bulldog, Coco, who died from a heart attack. Remembering the years he had with Roscoe, even while still grieving Coco’s unexpected death, Lewis spoke about how heartbreaking it was to disconnect him from life support.
“Bringing Roscoe into my life was the best decision I ever made, and I will always treasure the memories we shared,” he wrote. “Losing Coco was especially hard, as I’d never had to make the difficult decision to euthanize a dog before, though I know my mother and many friends have. It’s an incredibly painful experience, and I feel a strong empathy for anyone who has lost a cherished pet.”
He went on to say, “Even though it was incredibly difficult, having him in my life was one of the greatest joys – to experience such profound love and to have that love returned.”
The F1 alum signed off by detailing Roscoe’s last moments.
I’m heartbroken to share that our beloved Roscoe passed away on Sunday evening, September 28th, peacefully in my arms. It was such a deeply personal moment, and I felt so much love. I want to say thank you to everyone for all the love and support you’ve shown him over the years. It’s been incredibly special to witness and feel all of your kindness. He will be dearly missed.
Lewis-who shared the news of Roscoe’s passing on X-later added on September 29th that “He’s with Coco now.”
Throughout the final period of Lewis’ career, Roscoe remained a constant companion, and the official Formula One organization expressed their sadness at the loss of the dog, calling him “a star in his own right.”
The post on X, published on September 29th, said, “Lewis Hamilton’s cherished dog, Roscoe, always brought joy to the racing community and touched the hearts of fans worldwide.” It continued, “We’re sending our condolences to Lewis during this sad time. Rest in peace, Roscoe – from being a playful pup in the paddock to a beloved internet icon, thank you for the pawprints you left on all of our hearts.”
The announcement of Roscoe’s passing arrived shortly after Lewis revealed he was hospitalized and in a coma, fighting pneumonia.
“Roscoe developed pneumonia again and was having trouble breathing,” Lewis shared with a very sad photo of Roscoe in the hospital, connected to a machine, as Lewis kissed him. “He was taken to the hospital and given medication to help him relax while doctors ran tests. Unfortunately, his heart stopped during the process. Doctors were able to restart his heart, but now he’s in a coma.”
Since being adopted by Lewis in 2013, Roscoe became well-known in Formula One. He was often seen with Lewis after race wins and in the F1 paddock. Lewis has often spoken about Roscoe’s wonderful personality and how much he enjoyed being pampered.
“He’s incredibly kind and a real sweetheart,” Lewis shared with Vogue in August. “People can easily approach him, and he’s never shown aggression towards anyone. He’s very laid-back and doesn’t get upset around other dogs. He’s probably the most relaxed dog you’ll ever meet, except when he spots a bowling ball or football.”
“He really loves expensive sneakers,” Lewis explained. “He’ll grab my Dior trainers and always brings them along. He’s just so bougie.”
