Lewis Pullman Teases He’s a “Disappointment” to Dad Bill Pullman

Sometimes the sequel matches up to the original.

On March 15th at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood, actors Bill Pullman and his son Lewis Pullman presented the Best Editing award at the 2026 Oscars, with Conan O’Brien hosting the show. They shared a lighthearted moment during the presentation.

When Lewis, 33, and another person came on stage to speak, Lewis made a joke comparing a film editor’s job – shaping how a movie turns out – to the way actor Will Smith had shaped his own career.

“But I didn’t really shape anything,” Bill told his son. “I stayed behind the scenes.”

The 72-year-old jokingly added, “I once thought you’d be good at working with animals, but that didn’t quite pan out.”

Lewis agreed with the Spaceballs alum, too.

“Yeah, big disappointment there,” the 33-year-old added, before taking a more sentimental turn. “We’re lucky. Turns out audiences don’t always mind the sequel.”

Noting the similarity, Bill – who is also the father of Maesa, 38, and Jack, 37, with his wife Tamara Hurwitz – added, “I’m hoping the new one is even better than the first.”

Lewis and his father grew closer while presenting Andy Jurgensen with the Oscar for Best Film Editing for his work on One Battle After Another. The Top Gun: Maverick actor has often said his father’s advice is incredibly valuable, simply because his dad knows him so well.

Lewis shared that this person understands his triggers – what energizes him, what makes him anxious, and what frightens him. Plus, they’re very knowledgeable about the industry and their art. Because of this, their guidance is always perfectly suited to his needs, and he feels incredibly grateful for their support – he doesn’t know where he’d be without it.
