The Prime Video series Reacher successfully addressed the problems fans had with the Jack Reacher movies starring Tom Cruise. Now, Netflix’s new crime thriller, also adapted from a book series, appears poised to do the same for a disappointing 2017 film.
When Prime Video announced a TV series based on the Jack Reacher books, many fans were hesitant. Previous movie adaptations had disappointed them with casting and changes to the original stories, so their skepticism was understandable. However, the first season of the Prime Video series quickly proved its worth, delivering a fantastic adaptation that exceeded expectations.
Netflix’s new crime thriller appears to be revisiting a story it previously told inaccurately, aiming to correct mistakes made in a film from nine years ago.

The initial Jack Reacher film, released in 2012, wasn’t a huge hit with audiences. Many were surprised by Tom Cruise’s casting, as he’s much smaller than the character described in the books. However, viewers generally agreed that Cruise still managed to capture Reacher’s compelling presence. The movie also performed well financially, earning nearly $220 million on a $60 million budget.
While the first film was successful, the sequel, Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, was a noticeable step down in quality and proved that the movies weren’t truly capturing the spirit of the original books.
Prime Video’s Reacher quickly found success by casting the right actor for Jack Reacher and dedicating each season to a single book. Now, Netflix’s new crime thriller, Detective Hole based on Jo Nesbo’s novels, seems to be learning from past mistakes and is off to a strong start, improving on previous adaptations.
The series is adapted from the popular Detective Hole novels by Norwegian author Jo Nesbø. Similar to the Jack Reacher books, an attempt was made to turn Nesbø’s work into a film, called The Snowman. The movie featured a star-studded cast, including Michael Fassbender, Rebecca Ferguson, Val Kilmer, and JK Simmons. However, it wasn’t successful, performing poorly in theaters and receiving a low 7% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
The new Netflix series, Detective Hole, is based on the novels by Jo Nesbø, who is also the main writer for the show, promising a faithful adaptation. Similar to Reacher, each season will cover just one book, increasing the likelihood of a well-developed and successful story.
Similar To Prime Video’s Reacher, Netflix’s Detective Hole Seems Far Better Than Its Movie Predecessor
The show’s first trailer looks very promising, and it seems like it could be a hit. It stars skilled actors like Tobias Santelmann and Joel Kinnaman, and the action sequences shown in the trailer appear to be exceptionally well-made. Only time will tell for sure, but early signs are good.
The detective series Detective Hole appears to have an advantage over Reacher because author Jo Nesbø is heavily involved, unlike Lee Child with Reacher. While it’s too soon to know for sure, the new Netflix thriller seems poised to be just as popular – and possibly even more so – than Reacher.
