Lilo & Stitch 2 Announced on 626 Day

It’s not a mistake: The development of “Lilo & Stitch 2” is indeed happening at Walt Disney Studios. June 26 marks the annual celebration known as 626 Day, honoring the chaos-causing illegal genetic experiment, better known as Stitch – who is now “2 Fast” and can be seen speeding onto the Disney lot in a new video promoting the sequel. This upcoming sequel follows the live-action reboot of the beloved 2002 animated film, which was released in May. The news of the “Lilo & Stitch” sequel comes after the remake, directed by Dean Fleischer Camp, made a splash at the global box office, earning $914 million since its release over Memorial Day weekend.

Check out the video announcement below, where Stitch rides a pink punch buggy to unveil that Lilo & Stitch 2 is being developed.

Similar to the original animated film directed by Chris Sanders and Dean DeBlois, the live-action version of Lilo & Stitch is a humorous and heartwarming tale about a solitary Hawaiian girl named Lilo (played by Maia Kealoha for the first time), and an alien on the run (voiced by Chris Sanders) who assists in healing her fractured family.

Following the crash-landing of the renegade Experiment 626 on an island, the head honcho of the United Galactic Federation, Hannah Waddingham, sends Dr. Jumba Jookiba, the creator of Stitch (who happens to be a bit mad scientist), along with Agent Pleakley from Earth, who’s in the know about galactic federation stuff, to apprehend the unauthorized genetic experiment.

Instead of the animated series, this version features a different setup where Captain Gantu is absent. Consequently, Lilo’s elder sister and guardian, Nani (Sydney Elizebeth Agudong), must handle interactions with social worker Mrs. Kekoa (Tia Carrere), her friendly neighbor Tūtū (Amy Hill), and CIA Agent Cobra Bubbles (Courtney B. Vance).

The reimagined version of Disney’s “Lilo & Stitch” has raked in an impressive total of $914 million, with $390 million earned domestically and $524 million from international box office sales.

Alan Bergman from Disney Entertainment expressed recently that people’s affection for Lilo & Stitch has only increased, and the aim of this fresh adaptation is to let viewers rediscover these beloved characters on the big screen once more. Hopefully, they will have as much fun watching it as we did creating it.

David Greenbaum, the President of Disney Live Action and 20th Century Studios, stated that “Stitch” is a representation of what Disney truly excels at.

In 2002, an exceptional animated movie was released that eventually evolved into a series, fostering a dedicated fanbase over time. This enthusiasm for the series inspired us to revisit the concept and bring this marvelous film to the global audience today, as stated by Greenbaum.

2002’s “Lilo & Stitch” led to various spin-offs, starting with the direct-to-video film “Stitch! The Movie” in 2003, followed by an animated series on Disney Channel titled “Lilo & Stitch: The Series”. This series introduced characters like Experiment 624 (also known as Angel) and Experiment 625 (known as Reuben). Two more animated movies were produced afterwards, namely “Lilo & Stitch 2: Stitch Has a Glitch” in 2005 and “Leroy & Stitch” in 2006.
