Imani Dia Smith‘s family is navigating the unimaginable this holiday season.
A 26-year-old woman, known for playing Young Nala in the Broadway production of The Lion King between 2011 and 2012, passed away on December 21st, according to officials in New Jersey.
Police found Smith stabbed after responding to an emergency call. She was taken to a local hospital but died from her injuries. She is survived by her three-year-old son, her parents Monique and Rawni Helper, and two siblings.
Following her death, police announced the arrest of a suspect, 35-year-old Jordan D. Jackson-Small.
Although authorities didn’t disclose how Smith and Jackson-Small knew each other, they confirmed the incident wasn’t a random attack, as the two had a prior relationship.
Police confirmed that Jackson-Small was arrested peacefully and now faces several charges, including first-degree murder, endangering a child, and unlawful weapon possession.
I can’t believe they’ve got him locked up at the Middlesex County jail! They’re making him wait for some hearing to decide if he’ll stay there, and honestly, it’s just agonizing. I’m constantly checking for updates, hoping he’ll be released soon. It’s so unfair!
Following the tragic death of Smith, her aunt, Kira Helper, created a GoFundMe page to honor her memory and provide support.
“Imani had her whole life ahead of her,” a message on the fundraiser read. “She was a vivacious, loving and fiercely talented person.”
According to the message, the fundraiser will help support Smith’s parents.
Monique and Rawni are not only grieving, but also working hard to keep their family strong,” Smith’s aunt shared. “They’re supporting their kids, unexpectedly taking on the responsibility of raising their grandson, and trying to rebuild their lives after everything has fallen apart.
