Lionel Richie Has Sweet Reaction to Daughter Sofia Richie’s New Baby

For Lionel Richie, life as a grandfather is easy like Sunday morning.

Oh my gosh, you guys, I’m still reeling! It’s only been a little over a week since Sofia Richie announced little Henry’s arrival, and now Lionel Richie is finally talking about how he feels! I’m seriously obsessed with this whole family and I’ve been waiting for him to share his thoughts. It’s just… everything! Knowing he’s over the moon about another grandchild just makes my heart so happy! I can’t even imagine how thrilled he must be!

Lionel shared with USA Today on March 31st how much joy he feels as his family expands. “It’s amazing to see the family grow and I’m incredibly proud,” he said. “But more than anything, it’s wonderful to see everyone happy and thriving.”

The 76-year-old playfully remarked on his grandkids’ nickname for him, saying, “It’s funny – I’m ‘Pop Pop’ to them, but here on American Idol, I’m ‘Papa Richie’!” He added that he initially came thinking everyone knew him as Mr. Richie.

Sofia announced the birth of her son, Henry, on March 25th, sharing a sweet photo of him with his older sister. The picture showed Henry resting in the lap of Eloise, who is 23 months old. Sofia’s husband is Elliot Grainge.

I was so touched by Sofia’s recent post! She shared a really sweet photo and captioned it “Loves of my life” along with the date, March 18th, 2026. It’s wonderful to see moments like these from Sofia, especially knowing her mom is the amazing fashion designer, Diane Alexander!

Lionel, who is also the grandfather of Nicole Richie and Joel Madden’s children, Harlow, 18, and Sparrow, 16, always makes time for his grandkids, no matter how busy he is. He says having them around again has been a wonderful experience.

He told TopMob News in October 2024, five months after his daughter Eloise was born, that she was so small he could easily carry her in his pocket. He described it as “amazing.”

Lionel chuckled, recalling the newborn phase. “You know, when their legs become little ‘drumsticks’ and you can’t resist kissing them?” he said. “I apologize for saying that, but it’s also that sweet moment when you gently blow on their tummy and they give you the cutest little smile.”
