Hello, Lionel Richie has some advice you may be looking for.
Especially for anyone trying to step into his shoes.
The American Idol judge shared on his son-in-law Joel Madden’s podcast, Artist Friendly, that enjoying people is key to a lasting career. He explained that many artists start out craving attention – wanting everyone to ‘look at me’ – but then, once they achieve fame, they often switch to wanting privacy and to be left alone.
The Grammy-winning artist explained that you often get what you wish for, but success isn’t possible without connecting with others. You can’t achieve fame or wealth if you dislike the people around you – you need to be able to interact and build relationships.
It’s a rule that means more to the 76-year-old.
He explained that sometimes meeting someone you greatly admire can be disappointing. He vowed he would never become like that person himself, having made a firm promise to avoid repeating their flaws or behavior.
He thought for a moment, then said, ‘I once felt completely unseen. It’s a terrible feeling when someone is clearly afraid of you, and you can tell they desperately want to say something, but they can’t. The worst thing I could do would be to pretend I didn’t notice.’
After all, interacting with fans is simply part of the job.

I always tell the contestants on American Idol that being likable has two parts,” he explained. “People tune in to hear a good song, but they also want to feel like they’d enjoy spending time with the performer because they connect with them as a person.
He explained that a great performance isn’t about polite formalities. It’s about making a direct connection with the audience – something like locking eyes with someone and saying, ‘You look amazing!’ That moment of genuine connection, when both performer and audience truly see each other, is what makes the night special.
