As a huge fan of the Terminator series, I was really disappointed when Terminator Zero didn’t get a second season. But I’m excited to hear that Mattson Tomlin – one of the writers for the upcoming Batman sequel – is thinking about revisiting the franchise. He’s said that if he gets the chance, he’d love to do a Terminator movie that leans heavily into the horror genre, which sounds like a really interesting and fresh take on the concept. It’s a direction I’d definitely be keen to see!
Mattson Tomlin on how he’d return to Terminator after anime cancellation
Well, folks, it’s official: my show, Terminator Zero, won’t be getting a second season. I just got the news via X, and while the reviews and the people who did watch seemed to really love it, the numbers just weren’t high enough to justify continuing. Honestly, it’s a bit of a bummer because I had a whole vision for how the story would unfold over the next few seasons, detailing the Future War. But, I also think the show works as a complete story right now, so I’m proud of what we accomplished. It’s a tough business, but I’m grateful for everyone who tuned in.
Set after the events of Terminator 2, the show explored two different time periods: a devastated 2022 and 1997, the year Skynet first became conscious. Although it received positive reviews – 87% from critics and 79% from viewers on Rotten Tomatoes – it didn’t attract enough viewers to be a success.
Along with news about the project’s cancellation, Tom Holland shared his vision for a potential return to the Terminator franchise. Responding to a fan’s question, he explained he’d love to do a live-action, low-budget horror film set in that universe, though he admits he doesn’t have creative control over the series.
This idea represents a significant shift away from the large-scale action seen in recent installments. It could allow the series to recapture the suspenseful, thriller-focused atmosphere that made the first movie in 1984 so successful.
Tomlin revealed he’d completed all the scripts for Season 2 and planned out a large portion of Season 3. He mentioned he might share details about his vision for the show’s five-season arc in the future. However, fans eager to see a Terminator horror movie will need to be patient.
