As a long-time Disney enthusiast who can recall countless hours spent in front of the television watching my favorite animated shows, I wholeheartedly agree with these suggestions!
It appears that the circular pattern of life, often associated with nature, also seems applicable to the realm of entertainment. Over the past few years, streaming services have significantly disrupted traditional television, only to find themselves reinvesting in live, channel-based programming similar to cable TV. Pioneers like Pluto TV were instrumental in this shift, and now many paid streaming platforms are following suit. This includes Disney+, which recently announced and launched its own channels over the summer.
On September 5th, two new live channels made their appearance on Disney+: One channel broadcasts ABC News around the clock, while another offers a selection of Disney Junior TV programs that rotate. As for additional channels, Disney has yet to disclose what they’ll be or when we can expect them.
At the moment, it’s uncertain what further channels could appear, however, let us not hesitate to brainstorm potential possibilities.
Here are 11 ideas of channels Disney+ should add as live TV options this fall.
Saturday Morning Cartoons
On Saturdays back then, cartoons used to amuse an entire generation, and they still carry a strong influence as a source of nostalgia in popular culture today. Luckily for us, many of these classic shows are now accessible on Disney+’s programming schedule.
Consider the nostalgic lineup that an old-school cartoon network might offer. A consistent playlist featuring shows such as Gargoyles, DuckTales, X-Men: The Animated Series, Darkwing Duck, Goof Troop, and numerous others. This seems like a clear choice, and a channel with this content could potentially attract a large number of millennial viewers.
Marvel Cinematic Universe
This seems like an obvious choice, and it was among the possibilities discussed in the initial summer report on the live Disney+ project. Frankly, it’s somewhat unexpected that a Marvel Cinematic Universe channel wasn’t one of the early launches on the streaming platform.
There are over 30 movies, multiple television series, and Marvel films outside the MCU available to fill up a dedicated MCU streaming channel.
Mickey & Friends Shorts
It seems fitting that, given Disney’s rise to fame largely due to Mickey Mouse, one of their streaming platforms should focus on timeless classics.
Reflecting on timeless classics like Steamboat Willie, Brave Little Tailor, Pluto’s Christmas Tree, and countless others from Disney’s extensive library, it’s simple to envision a live streaming channel. This platform would not only cater to existing fans but also provide a gateway for younger generations to immerse themselves in the cartoons that shaped Disney into the global entertainment empire we know today.
Star Wars
Similar to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, this is another obvious choice. For years, Star Wars has been an iconic force in entertainment, and its fanbase continues to expand as time goes on.
The expansion of the Star Wars franchise has been significant, encompassing 11 live-action films, numerous TV series on Disney+, and additional animated titles such as Rebels and Clone Wars. In other words, there’s an abundance of high-quality Star Wars content available for fans to enjoy.
LEGO
As a lover of all things LEGO, I’ve found myself captivated by Pluto TV’s kids’ section, particularly their dedicated channel for LEGO. It’s filled with episodes from various LEGO shows and specials spanning years, making it a treasure trove for fans like me. Frankly, I believe Disney+ could follow suit and create a similar experience for us LEGO enthusiasts!
Due to longstanding partnerships between LEGO and franchises like Marvel and Star Wars, Disney boasts an abundance of LEGO shows and specials. Furthermore, fresh waves of LEGO content continue to debut on Disney+, ensuring a continuous supply for the platform.
Disney Channel Original Movies
Just as Saturday morning cartoons played a significant role in our television entertainment, Disney Channel Original Movies (DCOMs) were an essential part of it for a particular generation. From “Smart House” to “Cheetah Girls” and “High School Musical”, there are countless undiscovered treasures hidden within the DCOM library.
Just let us have this one, Disney.
The Simpsons
Initially, when Disney+ debuted in 2019, a major attraction was the availability of each episode of The Simpsons, which could be streamed together in one location. The vast audience for this classic animated series would often leave the channel running non-stop.
It would be a genuine surprise if there was never a Simpsons channel introduced on Disney+. It would also be really nice for that channel to feature a healthy amount of Treehouse of Horror in the month of October.
All Musical Channel
Many Disney animated films are musical productions, with several of them offering karaoke versions on Disney+. In addition to these, you’ll find well-liked concert performances such as Hamilton and Taylor Swift’s The Eras Tour.
It’s clear that music plays a significant role in most of Disney’s work throughout history, so it seems logical to establish a channel specifically designed for honoring this aspect.
Disney Renaissance
Absolutely, having a dedicated channel for Disney Animation Studios films is a great idea, but let’s explore some more specialized options. Let’s delve into the beloved Disney Renaissance era films from the 1990s.
In this context, any content ranging from “The Little Mermaid” up to “Hercules” is open for discussion here. This includes the direct-to-video follow-ups and television series that many of these films produced. The period when Disney was thriving is often referred to as a golden age, and there are numerous fans who would delight in revisiting this era on TV continuously.
Pixar
Similar to Disney Animation Studios, Pixar boasts an illustrious past marked by classic movies and short animations that continue to captivate audiences.
These movies such as “Toy Story”, “Cars”, “Inside Out”, “Up”, “Finding Nemo”, and numerous others can fill up this channel. Additionally, the collection could also include a multitude of acclaimed short films that Pixar has produced in conjunction with their feature-length releases.
National Geographic
There’s a vast selection of National Geographic shows hidden within Disney+, enough to fill up a 24-hour television network.
There are numerous documentary series focusing on wildlife, some of which have been airing for quite a while. Additionally, there is a collection of Disney Nature films that, although not part of National Geographic, could seamlessly complement their programming lineup.
