Lizzo Shares When She Lost Her Virginity as a “Late Bloomer”

Lizzo thinks it’s about damn time she opens up about her sex life.

Lizzo recently shared that she waited until she was in her 30s to have her first intimate experience. She’d made a deal with herself as a young woman: she wouldn’t until she won a Grammy Award. After finally receiving her first Grammy in 2020, she honored that promise.

Lizzo, 37, recently shared on the March 31st episode of the Friends Keep Secrets podcast that she pretended to be more mature than she was for a long time. She described herself as a ‘late bloomer’ and admitted to not being truthful about it.

She jokingly revealed a childhood promise she made to herself: she wouldn’t have sex until she won a Grammy. She then playfully emphasized how serious she was about keeping that promise.

Lizzo, whose full name is Melissa Viviane Jefferson, recently clarified that she didn’t lose her virginity on the night of the Grammys. However, she did reveal it happened sometime during the same year she won three Grammys at the 2020 awards show – for Best Pop Solo Performance, Best Traditional R&B Performance, and Best Urban Contemporary Album.

As a longtime fan, I was really moved by Lizzo’s recent honesty. She’s always been so empowering when it comes to owning your sexuality, so it was surprising to hear she actually felt shame about her sex life later on. But she shared how freeing it was to finally talk about it and get that ‘weight’ off her shoulders, and honestly, it felt so relatable and inspiring!

I remember Lizzo talking about this, and it always stuck with me. She admitted she used to not be truthful, and then shared this really vulnerable story. Apparently, she and her friends were just hanging out, being girls, and someone suddenly asked her if she was still a virgin. She said it was so embarrassing to even talk about, but she did! It was so real and relatable, honestly.

“I said, ‘I love the D.’ I said that,” she explained. “And it held me over for a little while.”

She explained that her faith helped her take things slowly and explore her identity at her own pace.

You know, growing up, my friends and I at church made a pretty strong commitment to ourselves – we all agreed to wait until marriage before becoming intimate. But honestly? It was terrifying! I felt like everyone avoided me, and it felt like no one even wanted to kiss me. It was a really vulnerable time, realizing that making that commitment also meant navigating a different kind of social landscape.

Lizzo shared that she experienced several significant life moments later in life, including losing her virginity and having her first kiss at age 21.

She described the experience as awful, explaining she was really upset because it happened on New Year’s Eve and she hadn’t wanted it to happen. She was furious and felt like her first kiss had been spoiled. She was incredibly angry about the whole thing.

Lizzo didn’t reveal who she had her first romantic experiences with, but she shared that her boyfriend, Myke Wright, who she’s been with since 2022, has helped her overcome negative experiences from past relationships.

Lizzo shared that she’s not a fan of heavy kissing or sharing saliva with anyone except her partner. She explained that she finds it unpleasant with other people.

In her 2024 memoir, Rebel Rising, actress Rebel Wilson shared that she lost her virginity at age 35 to someone she called “Mickey.” She didn’t disclose to her partner at the time that it was her first sexual experience.

Rebel Wilson later told the New York Times that the man she wrote about in her memoir was her How to Be Single co-star, Mickey Gooch Jr. She explained, “He was the first person to read it, so he’s now aware of what’s in there.”

Megan Fox has said her first sexual experience with her first serious boyfriend wasn’t awkward, even though she’d had some awkward encounters later on. She told Cosmopolitan in 2010 that she was 17 at the time and felt deeply in love with him, making it a positive experience.

The supermodel shared with Love magazine that she lost her virginity at 14, right before she was scouted as a model. She said she felt incredibly confident and on top of the world at the time.

The supermodel shared that she was 22 when she first had sexual relations, with actor Dean Cain while they were both students at Princeton University.

Looking back, I remember feeling completely overwhelmed – it was one of those moments where everything just hit me at once. In my memoir, I described it as literally falling off the bed and just running. I was completely bare, dashing down the hallway like I’d committed some kind of crime – honestly, I felt like I’d just snatched someone’s wallet! It was a truly wild moment, and a testament to how powerfully emotions can take over.

Jonas Brothers singer Nick Jonas recently shared with Vulture that he lost his virginity at age 20. While he’d explored intimacy before that, he became sexually active at 20 and feels good about waiting. He explained that looking back, he’s glad he didn’t have that experience with someone who, in his words, was ‘crazy,’ and that he waited for the right person.

The actor, known for his role in Game of Thrones, revealed he was around 13 years old when he first had sex. He described it as a common teenage experience that happened at a party, and admitted he was likely too young at the time, according to a 2017 interview with Elle.

The Victoria’s Secret model waited until she was married before having sex. She married basketball player Marko Jarić in 2009, when she was 27 years old. They later divorced in 2016.

In a 2006 interview with GQ, she stated she believes sex should only occur within marriage. She also emphasized that any potential partner must respect her decision, explaining that a lack of respect would be a dealbreaker.

 

In a 2023 interview with Call Her Daddy, the former Suite Life of Zack & Cody star remembered losing their virginity at age 14. They explained it happened during a family vacation in Florida with an older girl, which they now recognize wasn’t a great situation.

After a first date that ended with kissing, Cole went to her hotel room the next night and directly asked if she wanted to have sex.

In her 2024 memoir, Cher: The Memoir, Part One, Cher revealed she was 14 when she first had sexual relations with a local boy. She described how he embarrassed her by rejecting her in front of his friends, even though they had previously shared intimate moments.

Cher explained that while he was kind to her when they were alone, he’d act as if she was an embarrassment in front of his friends. She said she was deeply hurt by this behavior, which led her to have sex with him out of spite, even though she’d never wanted to before. She clarified that she would have considered it at any other time he’d asked if he hadn’t treated her so poorly.

The famous actor revealed he was sixteen years old when he first had sex, telling Rolling Stone he felt it was “young, very young, too young.”

In a 2013 interview with Hot97, the former Sister, Sister actress explained that her religious beliefs led her to wait until age 29 to have sex. She said she felt guilty afterward and chose to abstain from sex again until she was married.

She tied the knot with former baseball player Adam Housley in 2011.

In his 2020 memoir, Greenlights, the Academy Award-winning actor revealed he was forced to have sex at age 15, and believed he would be condemned for it.

He added, “Today, I am merely certain that I hope that’s not the case.”

The actress, known for her role in Sin City, shared in a 2013 interview with HuffPost that she waited until she was 20 to have sex. She explained this was because her mother had become a parent as a teenager, and she was terrified of the same thing happening to her.

Lily Allen’s father, Keith Allen, didn’t react well when she first became intimate. According to Lily, he was so upset he actually believed she had disappeared.

In a 2023 episode of the Life’s a Beach podcast, she revealed she lost her virginity to a man named Fernando while on vacation in Brazil. She explained she went back to his hotel room and didn’t return to her family’s room that night, instead sleeping in the following morning. She never spoke to him again after that encounter.

Lily shared that when she was twelve, her dad was so worried when she ran away that he reported her as a missing person to the police. She admitted the experience was upsetting and affected her relationships for a while afterward.

The former star of The Vampire Diaries lost his virginity at age 13. He explained that at that age, many boys are interested in sex.

During a 2014 appearance on her talk show, the Real Housewives of New York City star revealed she lost her virginity at age 16 on Valentine’s Day. She described her first sexual partner as a cute football player, and said they were very much in love at the time.

The Dancing With the Stars professional dancer, who described himself as someone who developed later in life, revealed he lost his virginity at age 16.

He once dated a supermodel who wasn’t truthful about her age. He revealed on The Meredith Vieira Show in 2015 that she was actually around ten years older than she claimed, putting her in her early thirties, and he thought it was fantastic.

In a 2017 interview with Andy Cohen, the reality TV star revealed he first had sexual experiences at age 13 with both a girl and a boy. He clarified it wasn’t exactly a threesome, explaining the girl was two years older and the boy was around 16 years old.

“It was a real first time,” he added. “It was exciting.”

The Teen Mom star revealed she was 14 years old when she first had sex. In a 2024 TikTok video, she explained it happened on a sidewalk, and she didn’t even understand what was happening at the time.

In a 1988 interview with Rolling Stone, he revealed he had his first sexual experience around age 13. He also admitted to experimenting with drugs by age 14, and as a teenager, he engaged in petty theft and broke into school buildings out of curiosity. He later realized where these behaviors were leading and decided to change his life.

Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey consummated their marriage on their wedding night in 2002. They later divorced in 2006.

Looking back in her 2020 memoir, Open Book, she realized that everyone feels clumsy and self-conscious the first time they’re intimate. She now understands that’s perfectly normal, even though it’s hard to accept in the moment. She joked that she continued a family tradition of people who said ‘yes’ to a lifelong commitment based on that one initial experience.
