Lobo’s Return Included A Deep Cut Callback Even DC Usually Ignore

Lobo is a seriously tough bounty hunter in the DC Universe, known for tracking down his targets with a grin and a cigar. He’s the last of the Czarnians, a race with incredible healing and strength comparable to Wolverine and Superman. However, he’s the only Czarnian left – he wiped out the rest of his own people. While his race had powerful healing abilities, Lobo isn’t just hard to kill – he’s actually immortal, a fact DC Comics recently revisited in a story.

As a huge DC fan, I loved seeing Wonder Woman go toe-to-toe with Lobo in DC K.O.: Wonder Woman vs. Lobo! It was set up like a no-holds-barred, three-round fight to the death, which created a bit of a tricky situation. You see, Lobo’s known for being completely unkillable. Thankfully, DC acknowledged that fact and cleverly worked his immortality into the story – it was a fantastic nod to his established lore and made the fight even more fun.

Banned From the Afterlife

Lobo gained his immortality during the 1992 miniseries, Lobo’s Back. Needing money, the Main Man took a bounty to hunt down the dangerous outlaw Loo. However, the job nearly killed him – he was fatally shot by Loo’s monstrous brother, Feces. Lobo died and arrived in the Afterlife, where things got complicated. Derek Dood, who manages the Afterlife and decides where souls go, faced his biggest challenge yet when Lobo showed up.

Let me tell you, dealing with Lobo is a nightmare! He was so bad, even Hell didn’t want him. So, Derek, trying to do something, thought maybe Heaven would take him. Huge mistake! Lobo just trashed the place, turning it into some kind of crazy angelic mosh pit. Finally, Derek managed to force him into Hell, but Lobo actually liked being tortured! The demons were threatening to quit if Derek didn’t get rid of him. It was insane! Derek even tried reincarnating him, but it backfired. Lobo died again – after a very short stint as a woman, no less – and ended up being just as much trouble as before. Honestly, it’s a never-ending headache!

Honestly, Lobo just completely lost it with the whole Afterlife situation. He couldn’t actually kill anyone there, including poor Derek, but he was determined to make everyone miserable. Eventually, Derek just caved and sent Lobo back to his old body. Then, get this, he sent out a memo to everyone in the Afterlife – a strict order that Lobo absolutely, positively could not die. Apparently, his soul was just too much of a headache to deal with, so they basically granted him immortality just to get rid of the problem! It’s ridiculous, but kind of perfect for Lobo, right?

How to Kill an Immortal

The fight between Wonder Woman and Lobo started with intense aggression. While Wonder Woman was the more skilled fighter, Lobo’s incredible strength and immortality allowed him to win the first round by overpowering her. In the second round, both fighters could transform into past or future versions of themselves. Wonder Woman became her most powerful form, aided by her Wonder Girl sisters, as determined by the Heart of Apokalips. Lobo, however, chose a transformation designed to be as irritating as possible, becoming his disliked New 52 incarnation.

I was watching the Wonder Woman versus Lobo battle, and it was wild! They brought in this younger, weaker copy of Lobo first, claiming it wasn’t the Lobo and therefore could be beaten. Wonder Woman and her friends really went all out, and actually won that round against the imposter. But then the real Lobo showed up, and things got tough again. She just couldn’t deliver a finishing blow, even after everything! Lobo was incredibly frustrating, bragging that he’d made a deal with God himself and was destined to win. It was a classic Lobo move, honestly.

That comment was a huge mistake for Lobo. The powerful being known as the Presence, who had been closely watching the fight, instantly appeared alongside Derek. Because Lobo had used disrespectful language, the Presence revoked Lobo’s immortality, and Derek formally cancelled the paperwork granting it. Without his protection from death, Wonder Woman quickly defeated Lobo in a fight that will be remembered as both hilarious and iconic. It’s a clear reminder that careful word choice is important, especially when you possess a unique gift like immortality.
