Long-Awaited Sequel to Steven Spielberg’s Most Underrated Movie Finally Gets an Update

Steven Spielberg is known for consistently making great films, with a career full of classics like Jaws, Raiders of the Lost Ark, and Saving Private Ryan. However, some of his best work hasn’t gotten the attention it deserves. One example is his 2011 film, The Adventures of Tintin, based on the popular comic book series. The movie only used three of the 24 original stories, leaving plenty of material for sequels. While fans have been waiting for a follow-up for years with no luck, Andy Serkis recently shared some positive news about the possibility of another Tintin adventure.

Andy Serkis, known for playing Captain Haddock in The Adventures of Tintin, recently told Collider he’d love to return for a sequel. “I really hope so,” he said, adding that he enjoyed making the first film with a talented team and that director Peter Jackson is keen on making another one, potentially in the future.

Will The Adventures of Tintin Sequel Ever Happen?

Ever since talk of a second Tintin movie began around 2010, the intention has been for Peter Jackson—who produced the first film—to direct it, taking over from Spielberg. Andy Serkis recently shared that Jackson is still keen on making Tintin 2, which is good news for fans. While fans are still waiting for official confirmation, this update offers a hopeful sign. Serkis could have easily dismissed the idea, citing the long delay, but he’s also open to revisiting the project.

It’s been 15 years since the first Tintin movie came out, and I keep wondering if we’ll ever get a sequel! It really seems to depend on whether Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson can find the time. Both of them are constantly working on new projects – Spielberg’s currently finishing up post-production on his sci-fi film, Disclosure Day, and Jackson is producing The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, which starts filming this year. They might get back to Tintin once those are done, but honestly, knowing their schedules, they always have something else lined up. So, while I’m still hopeful, I’m not holding my breath for Tintin 2 anytime soon.

Even if Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson were to collaborate on another Tintin movie and finish the script, they would still need the studios’ approval. Spielberg owns the rights to the Tintin stories, but the first film was funded jointly by Columbia Pictures and Paramount, which also handled its release. While both directors are highly influential, studio executives will likely make the final decision about whether to move forward. Ultimately, the project depends on securing funding, and the studio situation has changed since the first film came out. Paramount now has new management who may not prioritize a sequel.

It would be disappointing if we never saw another The Adventures of Tintin movie. The first film really showcased Spielberg at his best – it was a wildly fun adventure with exciting action sequences and great acting, all accompanied by another fantastic score from John Williams. The movie was also a technical achievement, brilliantly using motion capture and animation to faithfully recreate the unique look of the original comics. Considering how far filmmaking technology has come, it would be amazing to see what Peter Jackson and his team could do with a sequel using today’s tools. Hopefully, that opportunity will arise.
