It’s surprising to see a brand new game coming out for the NES – 35 years after the console first launched! This has sparked discussion about how games are still being released for older consoles like the PS4 and Xbox One, even as developers focus on newer systems. While most developers eventually stop supporting older consoles, some continue to do so for quite a while. It’s not uncommon for consoles to receive games even long after they’ve been superseded – the PS2, for example, continued to get new releases until 2013, around the time the PS4 launched.
It’s extremely unusual for a game console to be discontinued and then revived with new releases years later. Developers and publishers generally avoid releasing games for consoles that are no longer supported because there isn’t a large enough player base. While some original consoles might still work, many are broken or malfunctioning, making it seem like a dead end. Despite this, surprisingly, a new release for the NES is planned for 2026.
Unreleased NES Game Will Finally Release in 2026 on an NES Cartridge

iam8bit is releasing a working NES cartridge for a game called Xcavator 2025. The game was originally designed by the renowned Chris Oberth, who sadly passed away in 2012. He pitched the game to publishers back in 1991, but it was never released and was presumed lost. Luckily, Oberth’s family donated his work to the Video Game History Foundation, where the game’s code was discovered. Mega Cat Studios then completed the game, staying true to Oberth’s original ideas and using the technology available in the 1990s.
Next year, you’ll be able to purchase a physical copy of Xcavator 2025 on an NES cartridge, complete with a 14-page manual and box, for $100. The best part? All the money raised will go directly to the Video Game History Foundation, so you can feel good about your purchase. It’s a special and unique item – a real piece of gaming history! While it’s designed for NES enthusiasts, many gaming fans will likely enjoy owning this collectible.
