Long-Running Shonen Series Confirms Manga’s Ending

Several popular manga series in Shonen Jump have recently finished their runs, with Jujutsu Kaisen and My Hero Academia being notable examples. Thankfully, both of those stories concluded as the authors intended. Now, another major shonen series has announced its upcoming finale, suggesting that today’s anime and manga might not have the same long-lasting appeal as classics like Dragon Ball and One Piece.

Yusei Matsui, the creator of The Elusive Samurai, recently announced that the main storyline will finish in next week’s issue of Weekly Shonen Jump (issue #49). However, the series isn’t ending completely – Matsui hinted it will continue for a bit longer. Similar to other popular manga like My Hero Academia and Jujutsu Kaisen, The Elusive Samurai seems to be planning an epilogue to finish Hojo Tokiyuki’s story. It’s currently unknown how many more chapters there will be, but fans are sure to be disappointed when it finally concludes.

The Elusive Samurai’s Anime Future

Even though the original manga is finishing up, the anime adaptation of The Elusive Samurai is just beginning! The first season is set to premiere in 2024, and CloverWorks has already announced a second season is planned, continuing this exciting and unique take on feudal Japan. Since the manga has a total of twenty-two volumes, the second season – expected next year – won’t be the end of the story. The first season adapts about three volumes, suggesting the anime could run for many seasons to come.

If you’re looking to watch the first season of The Elusive Samurai before season two comes out, or if you want to get caught up before the manga ends, you can stream it now on Crunchyroll. Here’s a quick overview of the story: it’s set in 1333 when the Kamakura shogunate is falling apart. After a trusted advisor betrays them and starts a rebellion, the rightful heir, Hojo Tokiyuki, escapes with a priest. While on the run, Tokiyuki begins to plot how to regain his position.

With the end of The Elusive Samurai, several other series have also recently finished in Shonen Jump, including Kaedegami, Astro Baby, and Super Psychic Policeman Chojo. This shows that even popular manga aren’t guaranteed to continue. Hopefully, Shueisha will find new series to take their place and keep readers engaged.
