Fans of The Lord of the Rings have a special treat to look forward to in 2026! Fathom Entertainment and Warner Bros. announced that they’re celebrating the 25th anniversary of the films by bringing all three extended editions of The Lord of the Rings Trilogy back to movie theaters for a limited time.
From January 16th to 19th, movie theaters will show The Lord of the Rings with a special DBOX immersive experience, followed by standard screenings from January 23rd to 25th. To celebrate, theaters will also offer themed snacks and collectibles. AMC Theaters will sell a limited-edition popcorn bucket featuring a map of Middle-earth, and Regal Cinemas will offer a bucket designed like the One Ring.
Fans recently saw these films in theaters earlier this year, so it hasn’t been long since they were on the big screen. Plus, many Lord of the Rings fans make it a yearly tradition to watch the entire extended trilogy, meaning there’s likely a strong audience eager to see it again.
The first movie in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, The Fellowship of the Rings, came out in 2001. The Two Towers followed a year later in 2002, and the critically acclaimed final film, The Return of the King, was released in 2003. All three films were directed by Peter Jackson, who also co-wrote the screenplays with Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens. They adapted J.R.R. Tolkien’s famous fantasy novels, which were previously thought to be impossible to make into films.
The Lord of the Rings Returns In More Ways Than One
The Lord of the Rings trilogy was a massive success, earning nearly $3 billion worldwide and winning 17 Academy Awards. The Return of the King was particularly celebrated, winning 11 Oscars, including Best Picture. This tied it with Ben-Hur and Titanic for the most Oscars ever won by a single film.
Ten years after The Lord of the Rings, Peter Jackson revisited Middle-earth to create The Hobbit as a prequel trilogy. The three films – An Unexpected Journey, The Desolation of Smaug, and The Battle of the Five Armies – came out in 2012, 2013, and 2014, respectively.
As a huge fan, I’m really excited to see the extended editions of The Lord of the Rings back in cinemas! For a while there, it felt like we’d seen the last of Middle-earth on the big screen, but things have definitely turned around. It’s awesome that we’re getting a new movie, The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim, an animated prequel, this year. And even cooler? Andy Serkis is returning – not only to voice Gollum again, but he’s also directing! They’re starting to film the next one next year, which is just fantastic news for us fans.
Prime Video has also released two seasons of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, a series taking place in the world of Middle-earth during its Second Age.
