Lord of the Rings Game From 2011 May Be Getting Surprising Remaster

As a huge Lord of the Rings fan, I’m really excited to hear that the game from 2011 might be getting a re-release – it sounds like a remaster could be on the way! It’s always felt like such a massive franchise hasn’t gotten the video game treatment it deserves. Lately, we’ve mostly seen smaller, more unusual Lord of the Rings games, and it’s been a while since we had a really big one. The last truly major release was Middle-earth: Shadow of War back in 2017, and before that, Shadow of Mordor in 2014 was a real contender for Game of the Year. Honestly, fans like me have been a little disappointed for years, and it’s not a new feeling. The series just hasn’t really shined in gaming, often because of a lack of really ambitious projects and some tricky licensing problems.

Before the release of Shadow of Mordor, Lord of the Rings video games were often inconsistent and didn’t usually make a big impact. For instance, The Lord of the Rings: War in the North came out in 2011, but the studio that made it, Snowblind Studios, closed down just a year later – a sign that the game wasn’t very successful. Reviews weren’t great either, averaging between 61 and 66 on Metacritic, and it didn’t sell well. Despite this, there are hints that the game might be making a comeback.

Forgotten Lord of the Rings Game

Despite not being well-received by critics or players, The Lord of the Rings: War in the North suffered mainly from serious technical issues. If those problems were fixed, the game could actually be quite good – and that’s likely why people are talking about bringing it back.

Steam developers have been quietly updating the game’s files, and its internal name has been changed to “Slinky.” This appears to be a temporary code name, but it’s unclear what it’s referring to.

Here’s a curious detail: the installation files now include the name ‘Aspyr.’ Aspyr is a company known for re-releasing and updating older games, often those based on popular licenses.

It’s obvious something is happening with this game, but it’s unclear if it will be a straightforward re-release or a more substantial remaster. We simply don’t have enough details yet. Keep in mind that everything you’ve heard is unconfirmed, and should be treated as rumor. Neither Aspyr nor WB Games have officially commented on the situation.
