A new film, The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, is planned to return to the world of Middle-earth in theaters. It will tell a story from the rich history found in the appendices of J.R.R. Tolkien’s books. The movie is expected to come out in 2027 and brings back key members of the original filmmaking team, including Peter Jackson as a producer, along with writers Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens. Andy Serkis will direct and once again play Gollum using motion capture. Ian McKellen is also set to return as his character, and there’s talk that Elijah Wood might reprise his role as Frodo Baggins. However, the project is facing some controversy, as the studio is reportedly considering recasting the role of Aragorn with a younger actor to fit the film’s earlier timeline.
Recasting a popular actor in a major film series is always a gamble, and often upsets dedicated fans. With Aragorn, this is especially tricky because Viggo Mortensen has been very open about how much he cares about the original Lord of the Rings story and how it’s presented. He’s said he’d only come back if the script was excellent – and so far, that hasn’t happened, which confirms fans’ disappointment with the latest movie. This situation is worrying because it could repeat the mistakes of the young Han Solo movie from 2018, where Alden Ehrenreich took over the role and the film wasn’t well-received.
Recasting Aragorn Risks the Same Outcome as Alden Ehrenreich’s Han Solo

The new Lord of the Rings film, The Hunt for Gollum, faces similar challenges to the box office disappointment of Solo: A Star Wars Story – it’s unlikely to earn back its estimated $300 million production and marketing costs. In 2018, Solo tried to convince audiences to accept a new actor playing Han Solo, a role strongly associated with Harrison Ford. Despite Alden Ehrenreich’s solid performance, the film was the first financial failure for the Star Wars franchise because fans simply didn’t want to see anyone else in the role. Similarly, Viggo Mortensen’s portrayal of Aragorn is considered the definitive version of the character. Casting a new actor to fill such iconic shoes inevitably invites unfavorable comparisons, no matter how talented the newcomer may be.
The situation looks even worse when you consider how troubled both franchises were when they tried to reboot themselves. Solo: A Star Wars Story came out at a time when fans were already tired of Star Wars, just five months after the controversial The Last Jedi. The fanbase was divided, and the franchise felt overexposed because movies were being released too quickly, losing their special feel. Lord of the Rings is facing a similar problem now. While the original trilogy is still beloved, The Hobbit trilogy received a lot of criticism for being too long and lacking emotional depth. Recently, Amazon’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power has been very divisive among dedicated Tolkien fans, and Season 2 saw a huge drop in viewers—around 60 percent—compared to its debut. The brand’s reputation suffered another blow in late 2024 with the animated film The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim, which didn’t perform well at the box office, earning only $20.7 million worldwide despite costing $30 million to make.
Warner Bros.’ decision to make a prequel and recast a beloved character seems to disregard the fact that relying too heavily on nostalgia often leads to audience disinterest. Fans are already showing fatigue with the constant additions to the Lord of the Rings story, especially when it feels like these additions are driven by business concerns rather than genuine storytelling. If The Hunt for Gollum proceeds with a new actor playing Aragorn at a time when other Lord of the Rings projects are already seeing decreasing success, it risks repeating the mistakes that led to the cancellation of the Star Wars anthology films.
The new movie, The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, is planned to come out in theaters on December 17, 2027.
