The critically acclaimed fantasy trilogy is currently very popular on streaming services, as interest builds for its new spin-off movie. According to data from FlixPatrol, all three films are climbing the charts on HBO Max before the spin-off’s release.
You’d think all three Lord of the Rings movies—The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King—would be among the top ten most-watched films on HBO Max, but it’s not quite that straightforward.
Currently, The Fellowship of the Ring has two versions in the top ten: the regular movie is at number three, and the extended edition is at number six. The extended version of The Two Towers is also popular, landing in ninth place.
Why are people suddenly streaming The Lord of the Rings movies? And why now? For many fans, watching the trilogy is an annual tradition around the end of the year. Frodo’s incredible journey and his triumph over seemingly impossible odds resonate with how many feel as another challenging year comes to an end.
As a huge fan, I’ve noticed a really interesting trend! Some people actually start rewatching the Lord of the Rings trilogy on Christmas Day – Tolkien wrote that the Fellowship leaves Rivendell at dusk on December 25th, which is a cool detail. That probably explains why The Fellowship of the Ring appears twice on viewing charts, with both the theatrical and extended cuts being popular. It also makes sense that the first two movies are getting the most plays right now, as a lot of us are just starting our yearly journey through Middle-earth. But the really dedicated fans, the ones who go for the Extended Editions, seem to be moving on from Fellowship and diving into The Two Towers already.
The Lord of the Rings Trilogy Is Returning to Theaters
Fans can soon experience The Lord of the Rings trilogy on the big screen! To celebrate the 25th anniversary of The Fellowship of the Ring, all three extended edition movies will be shown in theaters. From January 16th to 19th, they’ll be presented with DBOX immersive technology, one film per day, followed by standard screenings from January 23rd to 25th.
The first film in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, The Fellowship of the Ring, was released in 2001. The Two Towers followed a year later in 2002, and the critically acclaimed finale, The Return of the King, came out in 2003. As a whole, the Lord of the Rings Trilogy grossed nearly $3 billion worldwide and received 17 Academy Awards. The Return of the King was particularly successful, winning 11 Oscars, including Best Picture, tying the record for the most awards ever won by a single film.
You can now watch all versions of The Lord of the Rings movies – including the extended cuts – on HBO Max.
