A previously unreleased Nintendo 64 game has finally been made available to play, 25 years after it was finished. Canceled games are common for every console, but the N64 is known for some particularly famous ones. Titles like Dinosaur Planet, DOOM Absolution, Earthbound 64, and Fire Emblem 64 were all announced but ultimately never released. Now, a game that was actually completed has been discovered and is available to play unofficially.
The game Viewpoint 2064, a sequel to the classic Neo Geo title Viewpoint, is now available online thanks to the YouTube channel Hard4Games. Developed by Sammy Corporation, this on-rails shooter plays similarly to Star Fox. It was originally showcased at Nintendo’s Space World event in 1999, but was unfortunately never officially released – until now.
A playable early version of the Nintendo 64 game Viewpoint 2064 surfaced in 2020, giving fans a glimpse of its potential. Recently, a nearly complete version – considered a “master” copy – was found. Though the game never officially launched on the N64, this discovery ensures Viewpoint 2064 will be preserved and playable for years to come.
The story behind Viewpoint 2064 is reminiscent of Nintendo’s Star Fox 2. Like Star Fox 2, Viewpoint 2064 was completed but ultimately canceled and never officially released. Nintendo eventually made Star Fox 2 available two decades later through the Super Nintendo Classic. While Viewpoint 2064 isn’t getting a similar grand release, it’s now playable for the first time.
It’s wonderful that Viewpoint 2064 has been recovered, but many other finished Nintendo 64 games are still lost. Let’s hope more of these abandoned projects are discovered and released in the future.
