Nick Amato is clearing the air.
Following some controversy over comments he made about LGBTQIA+ children during a podcast interview with Annie Lancaster, the star of *Love Is Blind* season nine explained his statements, claiming they were significantly altered by editing.
Nick acknowledged that a recent conversation was heavily edited in a video he posted to Instagram on October 3rd. He said people can even criticize him as being superficial or overly focused on physical attraction, adding that he understands this is part of being on a reality TV show and considers it acceptable criticism.
The watch dealer stated he’d accept responsibility, but criticized Netflix for editing their conversation in a way that seemed designed to cause conflict.
He urged the streaming service not to create content that would further upset groups who already face discrimination. He also admitted he should have been more aware of the potential impact and takes responsibility for the oversight.
TopMob News reached out to Netflix for comment but has not heard back.
Nick addressed a specific comment he made while filming the pods, where he appeared to suggest that young people identifying as LGBTQIA+ are just going through a phase.
He expressed concern during the fourth episode of the ninth season about children experiencing those kinds of thoughts at a young age, wondering who was influencing them. He admitted it might be an old-fashioned view, but felt it was something to be worried about.
Nick explained that the trend he and Annie were discussing involved adding mature themes and content to children’s television programs at increasingly young ages.
He said he thinks being gay is completely natural, but he also acknowledged that he didn’t grow up around open acceptance of it.

He explained that he was raised to believe everyone deserves love and acceptance, no matter their life experiences or choices. However, he also pointed out that a child who only ever sees traditional families – a prince and princess – might struggle to understand or feel comfortable with different family structures, like those with two mothers or two fathers, and might even feel ashamed of having thoughts about same-sex relationships.
I was so glad to see Nick say he appreciated being on the show, especially because it sparked a really important conversation and helped him grow too. It felt good knowing our discussion had that kind of impact – on both him and all of us watching!
He shared on Instagram that he’s realized how past experiences limited his understanding, and he’s grateful to his friends for helping him see that. He emphasized this isn’t an excuse, but part of his ongoing journey of self-improvement. He expressed his deep love and respect for his LGBTQ+ friends and his commitment to becoming a stronger ally.
Season nine of *Love Is Blind* premieres on Netflix October 8th. Get to know the singles from Denver who are searching for their perfect match before the new episodes arrive.
