After a dramatic ending, Ryan Murphy’s latest series is quickly becoming a huge hit. It’s now the top show on Disney+, and viewers are enjoying being able to watch all the episodes at once.
The series Love Story is available on Hulu in the U.S. and on Disney+ internationally. According to FlixPatrol, it recently reached number one on Disney+’s list of most popular shows. While it held the top spot on Hulu for several days, it’s now at number two.
Love Story Explores a Tragic Real-Life Romance
Ryan Murphy served as an executive producer for Love Story, alongside the show’s creator, Connor Hines, and producers Nina Jacobson, Brad Simpson, D.V. DeVincentis, and Kim Rosenstock. Love Story is the latest installment in the American Story franchise, which also includes American Crime Story and American Sports Story. This is a new direction for the series, but future shows of a similar format are possible, following the pattern of other American Story programs.
This series tells the story of John F. Kennedy Jr. (played by Paul Anthony Kelly) and Carolyn Bessette (Sarah Pidgeon), based on their real-life romance. It follows their fast-moving relationship in the 1990s and how they dealt with intense public attention and the expectations that came with their high-profile lives. The series culminates with the tragic plane crash in 1999 that took their lives, adding to the long history of hardship for the Kennedy family.
The show features Grace Gummer as Caroline Kennedy, John F. Kennedy Jr.’s sister, Naomi Watts as his mother, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Alessandro Nivola as Calvin Klein, who Carolyn worked for, and Sydney Lemmon as Carolyn’s sister, Lauren Bessette.
Love Story Was Met With Controversy
The series sparked some disagreement and upset. Members of the Kennedy family expressed concern that they weren’t involved in its creation and felt the story of John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy was sensationalized. Daryl Hannah, who previously dated JFK Jr. and was portrayed in the show, also criticized it, saying it inaccurately depicted events and behavior. Some viewers and critics also felt the series was intrusive and didn’t offer a respectful portrayal of the couple’s life.
Despite some criticism, the show was a success. It earned an 81% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with viewers giving it a score of 70%, and it attracted a large audience.
Love Story is in the U.S. and on Disney+ in other territories.
