As a big fan of ‘Ludwig,’ I’ve been eagerly awaiting its return! It feels like ages since the first season dropped back in September 2024, but thankfully, the BBC has announced it’s coming back this summer – both on BBC One and for streaming on BBC iPlayer. I can’t wait!
To keep fans excited, the BBC has shared a sneak peek at the upcoming episodes before the new season officially begins.
I just got a peek at a short teaser for the next episode, and it’s got a fun little moment right off the bat. We see John stepping into his new role, initially presenting himself as a ‘puzzle consultant.’ But Dipo Ola, playing DI Russell Carter, quickly sets him straight – he’s actually a ‘crime scene consultant.’ John even cracks a joke, admitting it ‘does sound more like an actual job,’ which, honestly, it totally does! It’s a clever bit of character building and sets a light tone for what’s to come.
The new preview also features quick looks at Anna Maxwell Martin reprising her role as Lucy, and you can view it immediately below.

Last month, Martin hinted at how great the second season will be, describing it as fantastic and very high quality.
Martin stammered, “I… I can’t say anything. My mind is completely empty, and I’m afraid of the consequences if I do. I honestly don’t know what I’m permitted to share!”
Look, I’m a huge fan of the show, and honestly, this new season blew me away. I actually think it’s even better than the first one! We took everything that worked before and just leveled it up. It’s a real improvement, in my opinion.
Okay, so season two of Ludwig jumps right back into the action after the cliffhanger ending of the first season. Mitchell is back as John Taylor, but now he’s officially a Crime Scene Consultant – basically, the guy they call when the police are completely stumped. He’s teamed up with DCI Russell Carter, played by Ola, and they’re tackling these incredibly complex, seemingly unsolvable crimes for the Cambridge Police. It sounds like they’re really leaning into those ‘impossible’ mysteries, and I’m already intrigued to see how they pull it off.
Now that he doesn’t have to pretend to be someone else, he’s truly embracing who he is: a genius at puzzles, but a bit clumsy at everything else.
However, John’s twin brother, James, remains missing. Now that John works for the police station, he’s not allowed to use any police resources to search for James or find out what James was working on before he disappeared.
John and Lucy are determined to find James. John won’t give up, and neither will Lucy – she’s married to James’s brother and desperately wants to bring her husband and the children’s father home. The mystery of his disappearance needs to be solved.
“One masquerade may have ended, but a new one has just begun.”

The new episodes will feature returning cast members Dylan Hughes, Dorothy Atkinson, Ralph Ineson, and Karl Pilkington. Joining them will be new additions Mark Bonnar, Sian Clifford, Ben Ashenden, and Rumi Sutton.
Gerran Howell and Izuka Hoyle, two of the show’s original cast members, won’t be back after appearing in season one.
You can watch the second season of Ludwig later this year on BBC One and BBC iPlayer. The first season is currently available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
