The Pitt has gripped America. Does it feel to you that there will be a similar reaction here?
It’s good to be back in the UK and take a break from dealing with everything related to The Pitt. Here, people mostly know me as Ludwig.
The Pitt has taken over your life, so you’re not doing any more Ludwig?
Unfortunately not, no. I hope the door is still open, because I really love that show.
Noah Wyle mentioned that George Clooney suggested you for the role in The Pitt, which is why you were cast.
I’m hearing that for the first time – that’s really interesting! It makes me wonder if he even remembers who I am anymore.
Would you agree that The Pitt is an emotional watch?
Absolutely! I can always tell when someone’s been overindulging. It really shows on their face.
Whitaker, the medical student you portray, feels very real to viewers. Season one shows his very first day working in the emergency room. Considering you’re a British actor who also had to learn a lot of medical terms and details, how much of your performance relied on acting versus simply remembering information?
It felt good to explore those anxieties and self-doubts through the character. I distinctly remember spending a week in intense preparation – my mind was overloaded with medical jargon!

Supriya Ganesh, who plays Dr. Samira Mohan, actually considered a career in medicine before becoming an actress. She had a strong understanding of the medical concepts we covered. Noah was also part of our medical training, and he was always quick to volunteer and participate.
What real-life medical things are you able to do? Can you intubate someone? Or do CPR?
I’m capable of many things, and I worry about the awkwardness of being asked if a doctor is present when I’m the only one around and I’m not a medical professional. However, I was pleasantly surprised by how much carried over from the first season to the second.
The show features a mentor-like relationship between Forest Whitaker and his character’s doctor, Dr. Robby. Was that connection also present off-screen between the actors?
Noah isn’t the type to see himself as a mentor, but honestly, I really admire him. He’s been a fixture in the arts world for ages, and being around someone with that kind of experience… you can’t help but hope a little of their magic will wear off on you, you know?
It looks like you and Noah are the most popular couple in fan art and stories about The Pitt. Noah even told me he’s shared some of that fan content with you!
I don’t intentionally look for it, but it’s surprisingly nice when people interpret our characters’ relationship in a way that inspires them to imagine their own stories.
Your family are all still back in south Wales. What do they make of your new role and fame?
My mom was probably a little shocked by all the… stuff that got thrown on me during the performance!
The Pitt season 1 is available now on HBO Max. Season 2 begins 2 April.
