Marvel Studios made a major leap forward with its Defenders Saga in 2024, officially bringing those characters into the main Marvel Cinematic Universe. The first season of Daredevil: Born Again kicked things off, featuring the return of Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock, Vincent D’Onofrio as Wilson Fisk, and Jon Bernthal as Frank Castle in a new story set in New York City. This trend will continue in Season 2 this year with Krysten Ritter reprising her role as Jessica Jones, making her the second of the original four Defenders stars to join the MCU in this way.
With the returns of Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio to Marvel Studios, only two original Defenders remain: Luke Cage, played by Mike Colter, and Iron Fist, played by Finn Jones. Both actors have said they’d be open to reprising their roles, and discussions about their potential return are reportedly progressing well, possibly happening around early 2026.
In a recent interview on the Inside of You podcast with Michael Rosenbaum, actor Mike Colter, known for his role as Luke Cage, strongly hinted at a possible return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He mentioned conversations with Rachael Taylor (Jessica Jones) and stated he feels it’s “very, very likely” he’ll reprise his role at some point.
Krysten and I have been discussing my potential return to the role for years, and I used to be pretty dismissive, figuring it would happen if it was meant to. I wasn’t really interested in it at the time and was focused on other projects. But now, with Daredevil back in the spotlight, I’ve been talking with Marvel, and I think it’s very likely I’ll reprise the role eventually, though I don’t know when. I’ve had time to do other things, and I’m now open to revisiting it, maybe even exploring a different approach than before.

Netflix
Bringing Luke Cage back into the Marvel Cinematic Universe would be a natural fit, especially considering how easily Matt Murdock and Jessica Jones transitioned over from their Netflix series. We’ll soon find out what Jessica Jones has been doing since her show ended in 2019, but Mike Colter hasn’t played Luke Cage on screen since a brief appearance in the final episode of Jessica Jones Season 3, where he unexpectedly showed up at Jessica’s office to offer her support during a difficult time with Trish Walker.
When we last saw Luke Cage, he had become the owner of Harlem’s Paradise and a prominent figure in the community. Although he hasn’t been in the Marvel Cinematic Universe since 2019, a sign for the club briefly appeared at the start of Season 1 of Daredevil: Born Again during Kingpin’s speech. Given Mike Colter’s expressed interest in returning to the MCU, and with Daredevil‘s future now secure, it seems likely we’ll see Luke Cage again soon.
Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 will begin streaming on Disney+ on Mar. 24, 2026.
