Luke Skywalker’s Surprise Return Just Gave New Meaning To One Of Star Wars’ Most Controversial Scenes

Luke Skywalker’s recent reappearance in 2025 has given us a new perspective on a particularly debated scene from Star Wars. While Mark Hamill’s character is a fan favorite, one moment in The Last Jedi caused a lot of disagreement. The scene showed an older, grumpy Luke who had abandoned the Jedi path, ultimately using the Force one last time to save the Resistance, even at the cost of his own life.

Many fans were disappointed with Luke Skywalker’s actions and death in Episode VIII, feeling it didn’t align with his established character. However, a recent comic book series has provided additional background and explanation, offering the portrayal of Luke that fans had hoped for in the 2017 film, The Last Jedi.

Issue #10 of Star Wars: Legacy of Vader brought Luke Skywalker back into the official Star Wars story. In it, Luke appeared as a spirit to a troubled Kylo Ren following the events of The Last Jedi.

When Adam Driver’s character, a Sith, connected with his old Jedi teacher, Luke Skywalker, Luke revealed that he hadn’t been killed. Instead, he explained that he had chosen to sacrifice himself to allow his loved ones to live peaceful and fulfilling lives.

I wasn’t killed; I gave my life willingly for a cause bigger than myself. I died to protect my loved ones, and everyone across the galaxy, so they could have a peaceful and brighter future. That was the purpose of my life.

This sheds light on why Luke made the difficult choice to sacrifice himself in The Last Jedi, and could lead fans to view his decision in a new way.

A major complaint from fans – even Mark Hamill himself – about Luke Skywalker in the second sequel film was that his portrayal didn’t match the selfless, galaxy-saving Jedi he was in the original movies.

This quote confirms that the Luke Skywalker we knew from the original trilogy was still present, pushing himself to his absolute limit – even beyond death – to protect Rey, Leia, the Resistance, and the entire galaxy. He understood this sacrifice was the best way to defeat the First Order and finally bring lasting peace to the Star Wars universe.

Will Luke Ever Be Redeemed in the Star Wars Universe?

Some fans believe this scene with Luke Skywalker and Kylo Ren in Legacy of Vader will make up for how the character ended in The Last Jedi. Others, though, aren’t convinced it will be enough.

Luke Skywalker’s final film appearance disappointed many viewers, and it will be difficult for the franchise to overcome the negative reaction to his death and how it was handled.

Perhaps most disappointingly, Luke Skywalker may be permanently leaving the Star Wars story. Mark Hamill is aging, and appears to have moved on from playing the Jedi Master.

Since appearing in The Last Jedi, Luke Skywalker has made a few more appearances, notably as a younger version of himself in The Mandalorian where he trained a promising Force user named Grogu. Now that Grogu has reunited with his protector, Din Djarin, it’s likely we won’t see Luke Skywalker in that part of the Star Wars story again.

Fans hoping for a satisfying conclusion to Luke Skywalker’s story – one that addresses the controversial choices made in The Last Jedi – may find it in future films from Lucasfilm. A possibility is Luke appearing as a Force Ghost in Daisy Ridley’s upcoming movie about a new Jedi Order, offering guidance as she works to restore the Jedi way.

This storyline could finally deliver the mentor-student dynamic fans wanted from Episode VIII, and further develop the older, more seasoned version of Luke Skywalker that debuted in the 2017 movie.
