Neil Cross, the creator of the popular series Luther, has a new thriller called The Iris Affair. It centers on Cameron, an entrepreneur played by Tom Hollander, and Iris (Niamh Algar), who stole from him, leading to a tense pursuit.
Iris stole a journal containing the codes to activate a dangerous machine that could alter the course of human history. Realizing how destructive it could be, she understood she needed to prevent it from falling into the wrong hands.
With a story that feels complete, viewers might be asking if this show is just a single season, or if it will return for more.
So, I just finished watching an interview with screenwriter Zach Cross for our series, The TopMob Writers’ Room – it’s where we really dig into what makes these guys tick, you know, what inspires them. He shared some really interesting thoughts, and I wanted to share what he had to say.

Honestly, I’m really hoping they keep this going. I’ve become so invested in these characters, and I have a ton of ideas for where the story could go next. Plus, let’s be real, a return trip to Italy sounds amazing – for both the characters and me!
During a conversation with The TopMob Writers’ Room, Cross discussed his work on shows like Luther, Doctor Who, Spooks, and Hard Sun. He also explained how he came up with the dual timeline structure for The Iris Affair.
Honestly, it wasn’t my original plan at all. I initially envisioned just a single flashback episode, number four, to be exact. But after Sky commissioned the show, the editors felt that approach might be a little too simple. It kind of evolved from there during the editing process into what you see now.
Honestly, I really appreciate how carefully they’re thinking about revealing information. They’ve realized some backstory is crucial to understand what’s happening. And thank goodness for that! I definitely didn’t want to be stuck listening to characters just *talking* about the important stuff, like this incredible machine in Slovenia – I want to *see* it in action, not just hear about it!
“So we’re going to have to have, now and again, a kind of dual timeline.'”
