Lynley star argues why BBC drama’s class dynamic makes it stand out from other detective shows

The popular Inspector Lynley mystery series is back, now adapted from later books by Elizabeth George, starting with the story ‘A Place of Hiding’.

This new version of the detective series begins at the beginning of Thomas Lynley and Barbara Havers’ partnership. Actors Leo Suter and Sofia Barclay, who play the leads, believe this fresh start sets it apart from other detective shows.

He explained that the relationship between the detective and sergeant is a key part of their story.

The fascinating thing is how much society changes over time. Revisiting this project in 2025, knowing it was originally done 20 years earlier, will be a great way to see how class structures, and England and Norfolk themselves, have evolved.

Our show has a special quality that sets it apart, but we also feature classic detective elements that viewers enjoy. We actually emphasized those popular aspects because they work well.

Barclay pointed out that the show stays interesting thanks to its diverse locations, which include both cityscapes and countryside settings.

What’s great about each episode is that it explores different situations and settings. Episode four, in particular, really showcases the unique challenges and criminal activity found in various parts of the country.

Dishonest people exist everywhere, from exclusive resorts to the neighborhoods we live in. It was interesting to see that reflected in the show over the course of the four episodes.

The new show features Tommy Lynley, a highly skilled detective who’s seen as different by his colleagues because he comes from an aristocratic family. He’s partnered with Barbara Havers, a sergeant known for her independent spirit and working-class roots. The series is written by Steve Thompson, known for his work on shows like ‘Doctor Who’ and ‘Vienna Blood’.

Despite their differences, Lynley and Havers unexpectedly make a powerful team, united by their commitment to finding justice.
