The latest episode of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms hints at a big plotline, though it likely won’t come to fruition until Season 10. Foreshadowing is common in the Song of Ice and Fire universe. Both Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon frequently use subtle clues to suggest future events. Game of Thrones actually started doing this in its very first episode, with images like the dead stag and direwolf hinting at the eventual fates of Robert Baratheon and Ned Stark.
The new series, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, appears to be building storylines much like its predecessors, and it’s already hinting at events that won’t happen for several seasons. This subtle foreshadowing is easy to overlook. For example, when Lyonel Baratheon assists Ser Duncan the Tall during his trial by combat, he says something that foreshadows a future conflict between them, as detailed in George R.R. Martin’s The World of Ice and Fire. Please be warned: spoilers for Episode 4 of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms and the series’ future plot follow.
Lyonel Baratheon Just Teased His Upcoming Duel With Dunk

I’m really getting into this whole trial of seven Dunk’s involved in! It was awesome when Lyonel Baratheon showed up, practically buzzing with eagerness to go up against Prince Aerion’s team. He even admitted Egg was the one who brought him in, and then he said the best thing – he wasn’t going to miss a chance to mess up those Kingsguard in their fancy white armor! It makes sense, though, since the Targaryens are ruling at this point in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, and with so many princes on the other side, it was bound to mean facing off against the Kingsguard eventually.
The Laughing Storm’s eagerness for a challenge hints at a future event detailed in George R.R. Martin’s The World of Ice and Fire. Over thirty years after the events of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, the king—now Egg and sitting on the Iron Throne—plans a marriage between his son and Lyonel’s daughter. However, the prince breaks this agreement and marries someone of lower social standing. This leads Lyonel to rebel against the throne, a conflict that is ultimately resolved when he duels Ser Dunk and surrenders.
Currently (237 AC), Dunk is leading the Kingsguard protecting Egg, which means Lyonel will have another chance to challenge one of its members – though things won’t go his way. Despite a possible delay, their meeting promises to be a dramatic scene.
Lyonel & Dunk Likely Won’t Face Each Other Until A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Season 10

Ira Parker, the showrunner for the A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms series (a Game of Thrones spinoff), has revealed an ambitious plan for 15 seasons. The show will follow the adventures of Dunk and Egg at various stages of their lives. The initial seasons will cover the events of the first three novellas by George R.R. Martin, focusing on Egg’s time as Dunk’s squire. Parker intends to produce additional seasons in the future, allowing for the actors to age naturally alongside their characters, as he explained in an interview with Esquire.
I really hope George continues writing these stories. I’ve even suggested to HBO – with a bit of playful skepticism – that we could do four or five seasons focusing on a young Egg. Then, after about ten years, we could do another four or five seasons with the actors Dexter and Peter as they are currently. Finally, we’d revisit the story ten years after that, showing Egg as an adult. The idea is to follow their lives – and mine – over a long period of time.
This is a bold idea, and if it comes to fruition, we might finally see a confrontation between Dunk and Lyonel on screen. According to current plans, this event wouldn’t happen until somewhere between the ninth and eleventh seasons, early in Egg’s time as king, but after he’s grown up and ruling the Seven Kingdoms. The line in Episode 4 referencing Lyonel is a clever nod to this potential storyline, even if the planned spin-off series never actually gets there. It’s encouraging that the creators clearly have a strong understanding of the source material.
