The planned spin-off movie for M3GAN has hit a snag. Just weeks before its scheduled release on January 9th, Universal Pictures has removed it from their schedule. Now, the film’s producers, Blumhouse-Atomic Monster, are looking for a different studio to distribute it.
Katie Dolan’s film, Soulm8te, was intended to build upon the popularity of the first two M3GAN movies, potentially launching a connected cinematic universe. However, plans for Soulm8te were cancelled, possibly because M3GAN 2.0 didn’t perform as well in theaters as the original M3GAN, which earned $180 million when it was released in 2022.
The decision was likely made because the sequel’s ticket sales were declining and it faced competition from the new horror movie Primate, which is opening the same weekend. Having two similar movies released at the same time often hurts both of them financially, and Universal decided to avoid that risk.
There’s a chance Soulm8te might still be shown in movie theaters. If not, it could become available to stream online, possibly through Peacock, NBCUniversal’s streaming platform.
Soulm8te Was Meant To Expand on M3GAN’s Success
I was really fascinated by what Jason Blum, the person behind Blumhouse, had to say after the film came out. He pointed out that a lot of people were clearly eager to see it, but the tricky part is figuring out which movies those people actually want! It’s like knowing there’s an audience, but still trying to understand what they’re looking for.
We initially believed M3gan was incredibly flexible—we thought we could do anything with the character. We experimented with different genres, settings, and even her personality, trying to maximize audience engagement. Ultimately, we overcomplicated things and pushed too hard, especially with the summer release. We got carried away with the potential of M3gan, but the changes didn’t quite work out.
The drive to build a larger cinematic world around M3GAN might be overly ambitious, much like a superhero’s goals. The upcoming film, Soulm8te, centers on a man who buys an AI android to help him deal with his wife’s death. As he tries to refine the android, aiming for a more supportive companion rather than a sexual object, he accidentally creates a dangerous being. The film stars Claudia Doumit, Lily Sullivan, Isabelle Bonfrer, Emma Ramos, and Sydney Blackburn.
James Wan’s Atomic Monster, along with Blumhouse, was producing Soulm8te. The story was created by Wan, Ingrid Bisu, and Rafael Jordan, who then collaborated with Dolan and Jordan to write the screenplay. Michael Clear and Judson Scott served as executive producers.
Although this is a disappointment for Blumhouse-Atomic Monster, the studio is working on many other projects. They’ve previously achieved success with various films and have exciting future plans as well.
M3GAN and M3GAN 2.0 are both available to stream now on Peacock.
