Mads Mikkelsen’s past role in Star Wars came in handy for a recent family project. He previously played Galen Erso in the 2016 film Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Galen Erso was the engineer who designed the Death Star, but also cleverly built in a weakness that ultimately caused its destruction. While Mikkelsen only appeared as Galen Erso in Rogue One, the character has become an important part of the overall Star Wars story.
Mads Mikkelsen recently told Variety about a Christmas he spent helping his actor brother, Lars, build the LEGO Death Star. This is particularly amusing considering Mikkelsen played the character responsible for building the Death Star in Rogue One. He estimates the event happened a couple of years ago, though it may have been longer.
A couple of Christmases ago, my brother, who loves LEGOs, received the Death Star as a gift. He left it on the table, and I started building it. When he asked what I was doing, it suddenly dawned on me – I could help! I actually built the Death Star set used in the movie Rogue One.

The LEGO Death Star is a truly famous set. The original was released in 2005 alongside the movie Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith and contained 3,449 pieces. Mads and Lars Mikkelsen probably collaborated on the 2016 edition, which coincided with the release of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. This larger version, with 4,106 pieces, even made a cameo in the 2017 film Spider-Man: Homecoming. This year, a completely redesigned LEGO Death Star was released, priced at $1,000.
The story about Mads Mikkelsen and the LEGO Death Star is even more interesting when you learn his brother, Lars Mikkelsen, is also involved in Star Wars. Lars voices Grand Admiral Thrawn, a major Imperial character, and has appeared in both the animated series Star Wars Rebels and the live-action show Ahsoka. He’s expected to be a central villain in future Star Wars stories connected to The Mandalorian, potentially leading to a team-up movie directed by Dave Filoni.

In Star Wars Rebels, Admiral Thrawn is a powerful Imperial officer during the time the Death Star was being built. Interestingly, Thrawn didn’t fully believe in the Death Star and thought the Empire should focus its efforts on his TIE Defender project – a more advanced fighter that would strengthen the Imperial fleet against Rebel ships. Thrawn’s project was essentially competing with the Death Star, which was overseen by Orson Krennic and known as “Project Stardust.” This creates an interesting parallel within Star Wars: the Mikkelsen brothers, who play both Thrawn and Krennic, portray characters working for rival groups within the Empire. It’s a fun coincidence that the two actors, in real life, collaborated on building a Death Star model together – a memorable bonding experience!
