For Mae Whitman, parenthood has brought about a lot of changes.
Embracing a fresh start, the Arrested Development actress-who became a mother to her son Miles, now 14 months old, with her partner Carlos Valdes in August 2024-decided to switch up her look with a new hairstyle: bangs.
“It could use some style and a bit of personality,” Mae explained to stylist Jayne Matthews during their consultation, as shared in Jayne’s post on Oct. 1. “Plus, as a new mom, I just don’t have a lot of time to spend on my hair.”
Before long, Mae’s long, brown hair is styled into a modern, chic cut, complete with beautiful bangs that frame her face-it’s a look that’s both easy to manage and fashionable.
Additionally, for anyone wanting to copy the Parenthood star’s fresh style, Jayne explained how the makeover was done.
“We carved out some weight and added petals around her face,” the stylist explained. “So even when she throws her hair up, there’s still softness and movement framing her gorgeous features. It’s the kind of cut that gives you a little lift every time you look in the mirror, without adding one more thing to your morning routine.”
This video features a somewhat unusual sighting of Mae, as she generally prefers to keep her personal life private and away from social media.
Actually, it was her Parenthood costar Lauren Graham who first revealed details about Carlos and Mae’s relationship. This happened six months after they had their son, Miles-who was named after her TV brother, Miles Heizer. Mae had previously chosen to keep the identity of her baby’s father a secret.
Lauren shared that Carlos, the father of her child, is currently performing in Hadestown on Broadway, and she was happy to promote the show because he’s doing a wonderful job. “Dax Shepard’s Armchair Expert podcast” featured the conversation in a March 2025 episode. She described Carlos Valdes as a kind and genuinely good person.
When Miles was born, Mae-who acted with Carlos in the 2023 musical romantic comedy Up Here-simply mentioned “we” when sharing the joyful announcement.
“We fell in love instantly when we heard his little squeaks,” she wrote in an August 2024 post. “He’s the sweetest, most gentle, intelligent, and hilarious little piglet, and he’s become our best friend.”
She wrote next to the picture – a comparison of Miles’ foot and one of his parent’s fingers – “We are endlessly thankful he picked us to be his parents.”
