Maika Monroe teases her role in film of Colleen Hoover’s Reminders of Him as first trailer drops

Maika Monroe quickly became a prominent horror actress after her memorable performance in the 2014 film It Follows (with a sequel on the way!). She’s established herself as today’s version of iconic scream queens like Neve Campbell and Jamie Lee Curtis.

Whether it’s through her role in last year’s terrifying hit Longlegs, the suspenseful Watcher, or the unsettlingly funny Villains, Monroe has quickly become known for starring in dark and twisted stories – she’s a true scream queen and a definite final girl.

Now, though, Monroe is stepping out of the scary.

Her newest project, aside from the already-announced ‘100 Nights of Hero’ and ‘The Hand That Rocks the Cradle’, is an adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s ‘Reminders of Him’. The first trailer has just been released and is available to watch below.

The story centers on Kenna Rowan, a woman recently out of prison, who is trying to reconnect with her daughter and make amends for her mistakes, even though she has a difficult history.

Featuring Tyriq Withers, Lauren Graham, Rudy Pankow, Bradley Whitford, and Lainey Wilson, Reminders of Him is a departure from Monroe’s previous work with supernatural themes, but still packs a powerful emotional punch.

Monroe says she was eager for a change after finishing ‘Longlegs,’ and this new opportunity came along at just the right moment. She simply felt ready to explore something different.

It’s understandable Monroe wanted a less intense role, especially since reports say she became very anxious filming with Nicolas Cage for Longlegs. Her heart rate reportedly jumped to 170 beats per minute – much higher than the typical resting rate of 60 to 100.

Playing the character of Kenna in Reminders of Him presented some unique difficulties. While some readers haven’t connected with Kenna—finding her flawed and perhaps unlikeable due to her grief and complexity—the actress Monroe felt she could understand Kenna’s motivations and easily move past her past mistakes when developing her portrayal.

I found Kenna to be a really complex and intriguing character. Unlike some characters in this type of movie who are fairly simple, she felt like she had a lot of depth and hidden layers that could be explored.

I’ve always been able to see things from her perspective, especially considering everything she’s been through. She experienced a deeply traumatic loss – not only the person she loved most, but also the heartbreaking loss of her child after giving birth. It’s hard to imagine how anyone could cope with that.

I’ve always empathized with her, recognizing both her vulnerability and her strength, and appreciating the resilience that kept her going.

Playing a character with such a large and devoted fanbase, especially from a widely loved book, naturally comes with a lot of pressure – and Colleen Hoover’s readers are definitely not shy about sharing their opinions. Was Monroe worried about the weight of that responsibility?

She acknowledges there’s pressure due to Colleen’s large following, but she quickly felt a connection to the character. Having both a script and the source novel provided a deep understanding, and she hopes fans will be pleased with her portrayal.

Monroe shares that ‘Reminders of Him’ is the first book adaptation where Colleen Hoover has taken on a producing role. Hoover has been involved with many successful adaptations, including ‘It Ends with Us’ (2024), the recently released ‘Regretting You,’ and the upcoming ‘Verity’ starring Anne Hathaway and Dakota Johnson, suggesting this project holds special significance for her.

Monroe explains that Colleen, as a hands-on producer, was present on set daily – a level of involvement she hasn’t brought to her previous adapted works. Monroe believes this dedication really showed in the final product.

I was largely responsible for developing Kenna’s personality. We all understood the goals for the character, and I think Colleen [the author] really trusted my interpretation. Having her present on set was incredibly helpful – I could always ask her questions or get her input directly, which was fantastic.

The new trailer gives a compelling preview of Kenna’s story, showing her legal troubles, the beginning of her romance with Scotty, and her complex connection with Ledger. So far, it appears very faithful to the book. Monroe seems confident that fans will enjoy the finished series.

I was so relieved to hear her say they really stuck to the source material. She seemed confident, and honestly, it made me really excited – I have a feeling the fans, like me, are going to absolutely love it!

She chuckled, saying, “We’ve got a fantastic orange truck! It’s tough to be certain, of course, but I have a feeling fans are going to love it.”

We won’t know for sure until 2026, but with Maika Monroe as the lead, the project is guaranteed to be captivating. Whether she’s rescuing a friend from a cruel attacker or dealing with her own personal history, Monroe consistently delivers strong performances, making her a reliable choice for this role.

Until then, at least we have the trailer to tide us over.
