If you grew up playing PC games in the ’90s, you’ll probably love this new retro-style computer from Maingear – I know I do!
The Maingear Retro98 is a special, limited-edition PC that evokes a strong sense of nostalgia. It reminds me of classic gaming setups – think old wooden desks, CRT monitors, mechanical keyboards, and the sounds of dial-up internet. It brings to mind games like Age of Empires, StarCraft, and Diablo. Maingear says it’s designed to capture the spirit of the PCs that first got them hooked on gaming, and they really hit the mark.
The Retro98 comes in a case designed to closely resemble the classic SilverStone FLP02—that familiar beige tower from the ’90s with its floppy drive bays, red power switch, turbo button, green display, and even a key lock for security. It’s the PC many of us remember from back in the day!

The Retro98 doesn’t include a 3DFX accelerator. It starts at $2,499 on the Maingear website and comes standard with an Intel Core Ultra 7 265K processor, NVIDIA RTX 5070 graphics card, 32GB of Kingston FURY Beast DDR5-6000 RAM, and a 2TB M.2 PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD. If you’re willing to spend more, you can upgrade to an AMD Ryzen 7 9850X3D processor and an NVIDIA RTX 5090 graphics card.
The standard Retro98 computers use a Maingear EPIC 360mm liquid cooler and an MSI G power supply, up to 1250W. For those wanting even more power, there’s an “Alpha” version with a Ryzen 9 9950X3D processor, an RTX 5090 graphics card, and a custom water-cooling system with two radiators. This high-end model costs a significant $9,799, making it a purchase for dedicated fans of the ’90s with substantial budgets.
The case has plenty of room for good airflow and future upgrades – the floppy drive setup is just for looks. The first version features bright red and yellow cables, and the tubing includes protective coils. Everything is assembled by hand, and I anticipate the build quality will be similar to other Maingear PCs I’ve evaluated.
Like Maingear’s Retro95, the Retro 98 is a very limited edition build. They’re only making 32 of the regular version and 5 of the Alpha model, and there are no plans to produce more in the future.
You can visit Maingear’s website now to either purchase one of these rare PCs or simply admire their impressive, classic designs.
