Over the past few years, anime has seen a significant surge in popularity, prompting many celebrities to openly showcase their affection for the medium. Notable figures such as Ariana Grande, Michael B. Jordan, Keanu Reeves, and Megan Fox have frequently voiced their admiration for various series. Interestingly, Megan Thee Stallion is taking her love a step further by collaborating with Amazon to produce an anime series of her own. Intriguingly, it has been disclosed that one studio nearly brought an anime adaptation of the Spice Girls to life and possesses the evidence to back up this claim.
During an interview with Anime Ego, producer Laurence Guinness disclosed that Production I.G. had been developing an anime based on the Spice Girls. The project reportedly progressed enough to have actual series images, which depict the band members wielding heavy weaponry, evading dinosaurs, and executing martial arts moves. Guinness also hinted at discussions about producing a Wu-Tang Clan anime, but it didn’t advance as far in the development process as the Spice Girls project did. You can view the interview and one of the images associated with the series below.
Production I.G.’s History
As an ardent fan, I can’t help but sing praises for Production I.G., a name synonymous with excellence in the realm of anime. Founded back in 1987 by Mitsushisa Ishikawa and Tatayuki Goto, this studio has been a consistent source of captivating anime narratives over the years. From the iconic “Ghost In The Shell” and “Patlabor: The Movie” to the thrilling “Haikyu: The Dumpster Battle,” I.G.’s legacy is etched deep in our collective consciousness.
More recently, they’ve unleashed the second season of “Kaiju No. 8,” a kaiju-centric shonen series that’s been making waves across the anime world. It’s a testament to their enduring creativity and dedication to storytelling. Each new release from I.G. is like a gift, a reminder of why we love anime so much.
Regarding the Spice Girls, they were a popular act in the entertainment industry during the 90s and disbanded in 2001. In 1997, a live-action movie titled “Spice World” was released, based on a fictional story about the band, leading to a global tour from the artists. Interestingly, although an anime featuring the Spice Girls never materialized, they did make an appearance in one – Trish’s Stand in “JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Golden Wind” is called “Spice Girl.” Due to copyright concerns, it was renamed “Spicy Lady” in North America. Since the band has been apart for several decades now, it appears unlikely that the anime project will ever be finished; however, Production I.G. continues to work on numerous other projects.
